Farm Raves Farm Raves
Imagine the scene. It's two in the morning and blaring music keeps you awake. You look out of your window and see a mass of ravers partying on your land. You summon the police and they arrive 20 minutes later. What would you expect them to do? It's your land, the party-goers are there without your permission and you can already imagine how much clearing up awaits you when they depart. You might well expect the police to send the ravers on their way.
Wrong. Not if the case of David Benton is anything to go by. A farmer in Lincolnshire, we brought you his story last week. On New Year's Eve, his farm was invaded by dozens of ravers who broke down a gate so they could drive lorries onto his property.
They took over one of his buildings and installed a sound system for a 12-hour rave without his permission.
But when Mr Benton called police to intervene they told him that they couldn't do anything. They said there were less than 100 people at the party and so legally no offence was being committed.
"I said people have caused criminal damage to my property. I said I would like them removed from my property", Mr Benton told the programme. "The police just stood around and the girls had their arms around them."
Many of our listeners were shocked. The decision seemed to fly in the face of common sense.
But Mr Benton's experience turned out to be nothing compared to what happened to
Graeme Stephen. He emailed us because he'd found himself in a similar position - calling the police to move ravers off his land.
Mr Stephen had had this problem before - and didn't think the police would take any action. In this case, however, they did. They arrested Mr Stephen.
"The question is what are the police there to do? Are they there to protect people in terms of property, or is property irrelevant - in which case mob rule applies", Mr Stephen told us.
The Today Programme received hundreds of emails on the subject, and our listeners were divided. Some were astonished at what the police had done - and even had their own examples.
Philip Goodall from Buckinghamshire had found police reluctant to evict hundreds of people at a party in his warehouse because there were "too many people".
But others defended the police. Sue Matthews of Lancashire, who insists she is "not a police officer - or anything to do with them", said the police did act correctly because "protection of property cannot take priority over public safety". Dave Bancroft of Milton Keynes agreed.
"Any heavy-handed approach would have caused trouble and not 'kept the peace'," he argued.
Do you believe the police acted correctly? Click here to have your say.

MISSING MAN FROM DARTMOOR RAVE 22/05/11
Joel Andrews, 24, of Caldicot, Monmouthshire, was last seen at the Fernworthy Reservoir area near Chagford in the early hours of Sunday.
Specially trained officers from Devon and Cornwall Police's Tactical Aid Group and Local Policing team are searching the area he disappeared.
Police said his disappearance was described as out of character.
Mr Andrews was wearing a grey Animal hooded top and jeans and a dark green waist-length jacket.
Det Insp Brett Mitchell, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We now know that Joel was last seen at midday on Sunday 22 May and he was still at the site where the rave was held.
"I would urge anyone who attended and may have seen Joel to please contact police as they may have a vital piece of information that will allow us to find him."
His cousin, Emma Scott, said it was "really nice that people are putting in the effort".
She said: "Everybody's pulled together to help us try to find him.
"The more coverage we can get the better, because we just want to get him home now."
A Facebook page has been created by friends who joined the search for Mr Andrews.
PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH THE POLICE IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO, ALSO IF ANYONE HAS ANY PHOTOS FROM THE NIGHT PLEASE PASS THEM ON EITHER TO POLICE OR VIA FACEBOOK GROUP JOEL ANDREWS.
THANKS
Venue Manchester – Suggestions?? Hi
Can anyone can recommend a decent space for an invite only party/night (rave!) in or around Manchester?
We have been running nights all over Manchester for over 5 years now. These nights are by no means a regular occurence (think 1 or 2 a year)! With that in mind we never use the same venue twice and love "odd spaces!"
This time, we'd love to get some sort of commercial unit or somewhere unlicensed so that we dont have time restrictions. If thats not an option then a late license gaff will have to do (anything finishing before 3am is not an option - 6am would be good).
Think empty spaces, old man's boozers, weird ... capacity 200-250
Any recommendations?
Cheers
Boodang Music App available!!! ho boodang, welcome to partyvibe, glad you could join the collective, you seem like a nice chap, what are you into then?...
Clubbing in Kent Any PVers out there based in kent? I've just moved down from manchester to ashford and could do with a few pointers on nights out with friendly crowds.
Also, if anyone knows any small dance festivals in the area the info’d be much appreciated. The weather starting to get better is making me miss the parties
Raindance 23rd April 2011 – Anyone going???
Anyone going to this? It's being held where SE1 used to be, so essential it is SE1 but with a different name lol. It's very tempting tbh, Last time I went there was a few years ago, I was very new to the mdma world and I didn't like it. Then again I'm a big boy now so I think I'll be able to handle it! :love:12
Where and Who do I go with?? Hi!
I'm a 30 yr odl male and have just moved to London from New Zealand to take up work doing IT, with my partner and 2 kids coming later this year....
I want to go clubbing!! Back in NZ I probably went once every 2 months, not because of my age but because of work commitments!
Now that I am here i'm a little bit more 'free' so want to take advantage of that as much as I can :)
Problem is, I have no friends here, workmates all seem to be a little straight and dunno if i'm keen to go out on my own .. at least not with a little lollie to keep me going ..
Anyone out there in a similar situation keen to catch up, or anyone want to show me around?
Cheers,
Michael
Dance culture fades as clubbing magazine MINISTRY folds The Observer
Launched as a bible for clubbers during the Nineties heyday of 'Generation E', influential dance music magazine Ministry is to close its doors amid plummeting sales and a tide of change in the music industry.
The closure has been forced as the pioneering dance magazine - owned by the Ministry of Sound (MoS) - has seen its sales slip from a high of 120,000 copies a month to around 70,000. It also spells a change in fortunes for one of the most famous super-club brands in the country.
'There has been a shift from traditional dance music, clubs and clubwear as we know it,' said Mark Rodol, creative director of Ministry. It will publish its last issue next month and Ministry of Sound will launch a new dance title early next year.
'Dance music and the scene that surrounds it has changed,' added Rodol. 'It's not about taking lots of drugs and losing your mind in a dance club while waving glo-sticks. Dance fans are much more discerning these days - they're just as liable to listen to garage and rock music.'
The closure of Ministry mirrors the state of a host of other super-club brands. Last month, Cream, the Liverpool super-club at the nexus of Nineties dance music, closed after owners said the city's clubbers were seeking a more intimate clubbing experience. London's Pacha, based on the famed Ibiza venue, which opened just a few months ago, is also now largely empty on club nights.
The dwindling fortunes of the super-clubs are also due partly to a dip in interest in dance music as young music fans rush for rock alternatives such as nu-metal bands Korn and Puddle of Mudd.
'Clubbers listen to all kinds of music these days,' said Viv Craske, editor of Mixmag. 'So they don't want to go somewhere where they get the same thing night after night.'
Clubbing isn't as popular as it was... Fancy dress clubber Wry smile and gurner in a silly hat
Craske added: 'The super-clubs have not been very good at realising the changing tastes of clubbers. People have changed the way they go clubbing these days. They don't want to go for the big super-club phenomenon. It's too impersonal. Clubbers want to go somewhere where the music taste is a bit more eclectic and the atmosphere is a bit more informal.'
The closure of Ministry also coincides with a changing of the guard in dance music. Older acts, judged to be out of touch with the traditional 18- to 20-year-old dance generation, are being edged out. In 1995, British dance group Leftfield's debut album, Leftism, was widely received as the best dance album of all time, and the record produced a slew of hit singles. But 2000's follow-up, Rhythm and Stealth, fared dismally - and the group have since split. Similarly, The Prodigy - once a stadium-headlining act - have seen their new material receive a lukewarm reception.
'Dance music has gone back to where the music industry was in 1977, just before punk broke,' said Craske. 'Something new is about to happen. There is a generation of older DJs and musicians out there who are out of touch. And they are being replaced by a younger group of musicians that will eventually make their mark. It's a changing of the guard.'
It was a different story in 1997 when Ministry was first launched. Back then, MoS, owned by James Palumbo, could do no wrong. From humble origins in a disused warehouse in south London, Palumbo created a global dance empire with its own music label, clothing, radio station and book division.
The magazine emerged from the illegal rave movement and arrived at a time when the Ministry brand was a temple to the biggest social revolution in British music since punk. Ministry provided advice for the estimated 500,000 travelling up and down the motorway each week to go toraves and super-clubs.
'We've always tried to stay ahead,' said Rodol. 'As dance music changes, we'll adapt. Our new magazine will look at clubbing in a much more international setting.'
