Bullet Proof Hoodie Bullet-proof hoodie to go on sale
A bullet-proof hooded top designed to protect against street violence has been made by an east London firm.
The £300 "Defender" top will stop Magnum handgun bullets, according to the manufacturer Bladerunner, which also makes slash-proof vests.
Owner Barry Samms denied the hoodie was targeted at teenage gang members and said it was primarily aimed at US customers concerned about gun violence.
Mothers Against Murder and Aggression said it spread "the fear factor".
Lyn Costello, founder of the campaign group also known as Mamaa, said it sent out the wrong message.
"I don't think it helps. It spreads the fear factor and makes teenagers think they are invincible.
"It disgusts me that companies think about money rather than the safety of our kids.
"We want to encourage them away from a life of violence not towards it."
A total of 11 teenagers have died as a result of violent crime in London since the start of the year.
Thinner material
The top is made from a fibre called Dyneema, which is thinner than the material used to make traditional bullet-proof vests.
Mr Samms, who owns the Romford firm, said he could only manufacture a hoodie because it was not possible to put a zip into bullet-proof material.
He said: "Adults wear hoodies too. My mum wears one and you don't see her hanging out on street corners.
"We really thought last year when we brought out the stab-proof top that they were going to be for teenagers, yet they are the last people to actually buy one."
He said a mother from Walthamstow, east London, whose son had been mugged three times, was among customers asking for bullet-proof clothing.
"We've had quite a lot of interest from the US and a couple of calls from the UK," he said.
"I don't see that there is much of a market in the UK, because luckily we have such strict gun laws.
"People don't have to go to such extremes to protect themselves over here."

Hoodie Ban This is just crazy!
:you_crazy:you_crazy
I know we have hoodie ban in Denmark too,and I have more that one myself. But I have never been asked to leave a shop because of it...
Are things really so bad in the UK that a shop owner do that?

Jay was wrapped up against the cold for the shopping trip
A toddler has been banned from a North Yorkshire shop for wearing a hoodie.
Two-year-old Jay Cowper was wrapped up against the cold in a brown jacket with a furry hood when he went shopping with his grandfather in York.
Jay was asked to remove his hood by staff at Monkton Road Stores because of a "no hoodie" policy designed to tackle problems with troublemakers.
His grandfather refused out of principle and the pair were forced to leave the store.
'Will not rob'
Jay's grandmother Brenda Cowper branded the decision "ridiculous".
She said: "As soon as he walked in he (the owner) said 'do you mind asking the little boy to take his hood down'.
"My husband looked at him and said 'he is only two-and-a-half, he is not going to rob you'."
"The shop owner said 'well, it's my policy that nobody comes in and gets served with a hood up'.
"So my husband said he would go somewhere else and with that he just walked out."
The owner of Monkton Road Stores said his shop had been a constant target of crime and he could not afford to make any exceptions.

UK : East : Norfolk Hoodies Save Man in Park! From EDP24...
10 May 2006 06:25
When ambulance officer Rob Lawrence turned up to answer a 999 call and spotted a bunch of hoodie-wearing teenagers gathered around an unconsc-ious man, he feared the worst.
But instead of finding thugs intent on robbing the man, he was surprised to discover the lads had used their hoodies to keep him warm and that they were the ones who had called for help.
The public-spirited youths had even helped track down the ill man's family by putting the sim card from his mobile phone in one of their own to trace a home number.
Today all five of teenagers - Keiren Bloomfield, Oliver Edwards, Tim Feavyour, Craig Casey and Lloyd Palfrey - will get a commendation from the ambulance service for their efforts in helping the man in a Beccles park.
Mr Lawrence admitted he had jumped to conclusions about when he first found them at Derby Road park.
"I stereotyped the boys standing over the patient and prepared for a hostile situation - I thought it was a mugging in progress," he said.
"Once I got to the scene, I could immediately see the good the boys had done. Their assessment of the situation was spot on and allowed me to take over treatment.
"The part played by the boys in the delivery of patient care and their selfless approach and public spirit was superb."
The patient was stabilised, taken by ambulance to the James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, and later discharged.
Mr Lawrence said he had stayed in touch with the patient and his family and they too wished to express their gratitude for the kind actions of the boys.
