App For People Who Suspect Someone They Know Is On Drugs Dunno what to say about this THB, just came across it and within 5 seconds of arriving at the site I knew it was ridiculous. It states
[h=2]Do you think someone you know might be using drugs?[/h] Use our innovative Symptom Sorter to determine if someone might be using drugs without the need to physically test them
Here is the link to the "drugsign" site: DrugSign - App.
Apparently having an "abnormal interest in rave music" is highly suspect. Imagine the money drug workers and centres will save now they have no need to but testing kits. Why didn't someone think of this before?
Now I've had a better look I think it;s probably a joke, none of the links work on the site and I can't find any app available. Oh well.
Thoughts on an avatar OK guys i've decided i need an avatar.
I was thinking about an image from the band that the song title my user name comes from, but this would make me considerably more identifiable to LE and the like even if i'm clean ATM.
some generic buddha in lotus posture will probably win out, but i'm opening the floor to suggestions anyhow.
Hey, what the? Where is everybody? What the absolute f**k?
There should be tumbleweeds blowing through here, maybe the mournful toll of a single church bell.
Where are any of the true originals?

Using Yeast To Make Painkillers Just read an article on Ars Technica (Microbial factories could produce locally brewed painkillers | Ars Technica) on progress being made to make opioids by implanting the genetic material into yeast. Might be a long way off but interesting.
If anyone can help with a link to the article in Nature Chemical Biology, linked at the end of the Ars article I'd appreciate it (it's interesting, but not $32 interesting).
UN Commission on Global Drug Policy Talking Sense UN Commission on Global Drug Policy, which includes Richard Branson, have released a new report on global drug policy saying the war on drugs is a failure and should be scrapped. Whether any members of the UN take any notice of the report that they commissioned is anyone's guess (my guess is no).
Link with interview with Branson and audio of the presentation of the report is here: Video: Rethinking Drug Policy with Sir Richard Branson | Center for Strategic and International Studies
David Haines Beheaded in Syria Another one bites the dust. Well maybe not bites it it's more blown down his throat. BBC News - David Haines's 'evil murder' condemned by PM. Sure you'll be able to find a copy of the video if you're so inclined.
Rat-copter Dutch boy turns his dead rat into flying rodent - BBC Newsbeat

**Casting for OAPs Behaving Badly*** Hi Sarah
Your post came out black on grey (no one would have been able to read that, young or old).
I do know a fair few people of that age group who might fit the category to one or another extent; unfortunately one of the most interesting chaps passed away earlier this year.
The others also have children and grandchildren; and would be worried about reputation damage; therefore they only openly discuss their "safe" hobbies like amateur radio, electronics, working on preserved railways etc. With this last one its particularly important not to come across as a boozer or drugs user as those railways have the same strict safety rules as the normal trains and they would lose the chance to volunteer on them.
Another factor is in 20 or so years time they may need a nursing home (I'm a former broadcast engineer who works in one as an IT/building services manager); they now carry out background checks on patients as well as staff and may not want to admit someone who is a potential drugs diversion risk or might exhibit a greater level of "challenging behaviour" than that which already occurs when folk get older and get dementia or other health conditions.
I know a lot of these older party animals via the tech/electronics scenes (in the 1970s if you wanted a psychedelic light setup and loud sound system you had to build it from components); but they have either sworn me to secrecy or have told me stuff only when they know they have only a few months left on earth.
The rest of them are most likely still working on and off and would be the ones looking after the "facility line" you will be sending your finished edit to the BT Tower for transmission, or keeping your edit suite running well, making sure the colour balance is correct etc. But these days they have to hustle for work all the time and the next day they could be working with a conservative religious channel; so again have to keep their reputations clean.
Hopefully you will find some volunteers and maybe some who don't look like obvious cliché/stereotypes; I'd suggest offering the same level of protection you would to witnesses in an investigative reporting documentary to protect their identities; and when your show does go to edit think about what image you might be putting across; because we will all ourselves get older one day...
