This is a film about the technology which eventually led to todays internet. It is as old as I am…
If you don’t want to watch the entire documentary (which admittedly isn’t very interesting unless you are a hardcore techie), at least watch the intro for the comedy value (imagine if PV’s server was like that!)
I reckon though that the University profs still all dress like that even today.

Without watching it (at work), am i right in thinking the internet basically started out as a way of universities or researchers (or similar) to share information??
yep – this is pretty much the case.
Its worth a watch when you get home, just to see both what the old hardware looked like (much of which was still in use in the 1980s), the theme tune and and the sort of boffins who got it all working right at the start…
You’re right in that :laugh_at:
But it’s interesting to see how much it have changed over the years :weee:
Times fly :hopeless:

TBH I have only watched the first 5 minutes, and put it up because the start with that really old electronic theme tune and the ancient computers made me laugh (it reminded me of educational films I was shown as a kid, and also a comedy series called “Look Around You”)
The start was good..
And then I watched the last 25 minutes in hope that something interesting would happen .. It didn’t
:laugh_at:
I’m looking forward to watching this…
this morning I still had that tune running through my head 😉
i do love old synth music, some of the great remixes of classical was done on that kinda wall width synth, think its called the M1 or something like that, it does give a great sound tho, altho u can get shit loadsa technology to mimic it now, but the original anallogue synths were priceless
I wonder if any of those profs managed to live long enough to see the Internet go public in the 1990s, or broadband make some of the things they were talking about in the film finally feasible to more than just a few Universities?
edit: I remember even 1970s/80s books about computers hinting about the idea of sharing data across the world using the telephone network (albeit at far slower speeds than todays Internet!), and that it was possible then – but the Governments of many countries thought it was a security risk (the Cold War was still raging then) and blocked the idea or made it difficult/expensive.
