this should now be in the main parties section 🙂
location is here

PS: The other folk in your crew who are using a “philosophers-fair” type username (I saw them try and log in a few days ago) need to confirm it before they can post.
If they can’t get this to work and you PM me and let me know who they are and I can get this sorted for them.
yeh sorry that was me, i got a bit confused 😀
cheers for correcting the post, mate 🙂
you didn’t make any mistakes, normally this is a subscribers only bit of the forum and if you’d tryed to post here it wouldn’t have worked (you need the green name) but as a genuine community event I’m willing to make sure it stays in here.
the bit with the map is a cool thing Dr Bunsen added to the forum a few months back raaa, anyone can use it if they know the venue postcodes..
Im there!
Due to a last minute meeting organised by the main events team at suffolk police & environmental health at forest heath district council (thanks guys), we have had to pull the plug on The Philosopher’s Fair 2011 at Mildenhall Stadium.
Policing and security for the event would of cost £20k, which would of pushed tickets to at least £40 (for a 1 day event is too much). Not only that, they wanted us to compile a massive amount of paperwork in 3 weeks, an amount that normally take months to do.
We are trying our best to find an alternative venue, out of suffolk. It might be a bit of a smaller event, however.
We are very sorry to let anyone down, but this was completely out of our hands.
They don’t like free party’s and they make it near on impossible to run a small underground event like ours, so wtf are we supposed to do???!!!
although I doubt you could salvage this event in Suffolk and what I suggest might burn your bridges here (for holding events) and even bring your personal life into scrutiny from the Police, I would suggest you make a formal written complaint to the Council asking
* why they did not say up front the extra licensing conditions were needed
* why so much time elapsed before they called the meeting which they could have said up front
* why the security costs are as much as £20 000
* what the exact risks and issues are that warrant such a large security presence
and maybe even contact Archant (the local press) to spur on the discussion.
if the authorities are citing incidents at events in other areas as a reason for greater security you still have a right to get them to discuss this fully and frankly.
Also if they do not respond in time to any request or deliberately use bureaucracy to stop an event happening rather than refuse it outright its maladministration.
I can understand why the wider community consider unlicensed music events to be unsafe and unfair on landowners – but at the same time doing this is stupid – they’ve removed a source of income to a local venue and a local community, created a situation where there is more risk of young drivers going greater distances (EA is large enough as it is).
at the very least the councillors should have the balls to stand up and say “we do not feel these events are appropriate for our area” at the start rather than add last minute conditions.
PS @Alex (yep there are two of us :laugh_at:) – send me a PM if you or anyone in the crew want to have a proper in-depth discussion about this and how to approach Councils/Media etc. Its all well and good finding another county, and might be worth it for this year, but if we live in Suffolk, we work in Suffolk and pay taxes there, we all have the right to a fair chance at being able to hold an event here – or at least a valid explanation as to why not.
All this, good news and bad, needs to be discussed. It won’t be long before fuel costs / time constraints / the economic depression (all these things are interlinked) mean that it will no longer be possible for young people here to drive to Norfolk/Cambs/Essex or further afield for mere hedonism so its worth at least a try to rebuild the local scene..
