BBC NEWS | England | Merseyside | Life term for Rhys Jones killer
Now as much as I shy away from massive media bandwagon stories (Maddie, Baby P etc.) this verdict I showed some interest in… I am undecided, I think 22 years is a long time, obviously what he did is awful and he seemingly showed no remorse however he is only young so you have to hope for reform through rehabilitation surely?
Also, the news interviewed gang members and showed YouTube videos of guns. It is surprising gangs aren’t locked down if they post videos, unless street gangs are also masterminds at making their IP untraceable to CID’s best.
I know RIRA etc. have videos but they tend to be more of a… erm… advanced organisations, and now less dangerous!
i think he would have got less if he had shown remorse, from wot the police said he didnt…
they really dont like that kinda attitude.
it is quite a long time tho… most people only serve half there sentence, even for pretty serious stuff, but i guess the rules for murder are pretty tough.
I dont know much about this actual case,
but I believe lack of remorse alledgedly shows pyschopatic tendancies and usually tends to induce a longer sentance – as if you dont evidence remorse / regret for your behaviour there is less likelyhood for rehabilitation
but I may be wrong
yeah lack of remorse and gang involvement ramps up a sentence loads, it would have been 12-16 years otherwise
for adults the tarriff today can be 25 years plus
the reason youths brandishing weapons don’t immediately get busted is that there are of course many realistic imitation firearms, and especially with youtubes poor video quality it is impossible to prove if the guns are real – or (without other intelligence) even the gangs – it could even just be students or musicians making a fake gangsta movie for the purposes of a music video…
however when youths have filmed themselves committing actual crimes (even minor) ones they are increasingly getting a visit – there is a massive initiative going from the metpol force area all the way to Norfolk to scour YT, bebo, murdochspace and facebook for criminal activity and gain whatever intelligence they can and to take action against those posting the more blatant stuff..
also to get personal info CID still need to make formal application ato first the social network site and then ISPs with proper court orders/ RIP warrants, although increasingly places like bebo and facebook will hand over info as soon as they see a badge and shield..
he also did everything he could to hide the evidence that he did it
maybe he will reform himself. unlikely in our prison system and even if he does, no one will be interested when he gets out
should never see daylight again, should be left in a desert to survive, should be slowly bled to death

but that won’t happen
perhaps one of the wrong things with our prison system… it puts you in a room, without any kind of reflection, so you can go in that room and come out the same person
true remorse would be a more fulfilling punishment
22yrs is a long time, esp when you considr that, that guy that raped his daughters for 25yrs, only got 19yrs. People can change or have life changing revelations or be ‘born again’ or whatever its just whether people will be able to forgive and forget what he’s done. they are both fucked up cases, but i think the guy that consistantly raped those girsl for that long, should have got twice as long as this…
Yeh his cell should be decorated with photos of Rhys and condolence letters. Make the fucker think about what he has done.

if thats the case shouldnt he be in a mental hospital instead of a regualr prison, that way they may be able to ‘fix’ him rather than just punish him, for something that he may not even view as being wrong cause he is so gone in the head. (just playing devils advocate for a bit..)
if he didn’t see it as wrong why did he hide it .. why wasn’t he shaging his daugters in the livingroom or in his bed upstairs insted of in a basement locked away?
i was talking about the rhys jones killer, but i supposes he hid what he did as well.. my point is that he has to have serious mental issues to do it in the first place or have had horrible things happen to him in the past, that doesnt excuse it in anyway at all, but something has happened to him in his life to make him do that, so surely there should be a way of tryin to fix him, rather than just locking him up and throwing away the key with no attempt at trying to rehabilitate him. He needs to be punished, but that alone isnt going to make him realise that he has donw something wrong, i guess im just repeating what some have already said in this thread… no easy answer i guess.
I dont know enough about either case or the criminal justice system to really comment with any ‘authority’, I dont read newspapers etc
I imagine though if they had mental illness or disorders this would have come up in their deffense,
and I’m guessing they’d have either gone for diminished responsibility, for it to be taken into consideration or to seek ‘treatment in psych / secure hosp’ rather then prison,
however just by not showing remorse or regret isnt enough of a defence to sugest current mental illnes AFAIK, and is very common..
I do find it a shame that a man who subjected his daughters to a living hell, and who are now left with the damage he has done to them for the rest of their lives and the lives of the ‘children’ – if any survived? got off with such a sentance..
well alot of people i know that have been to both mental hospital and prison say prison is far better than mental hospital .. so it would be more of a punishment in mental hospital .. mabey this is the way forward .. the only thing is the hospitals would have to have the security of prisons anyway .. so to be perfectly honest it would still be prisson they would just dose you up on loads of meds and try and consil them .. wich they do in prisson any way (apart from the meds bit) alltho the counseling is only a small part of the rehabilitation prosess in prisson. the fact is tho the entire justice system would have to be overhauled for any thing like this to happen and either loads more mental hospitals built or prissons turned into mental hospitals .. and there is a lack of space in the prissons as it is at the moment .. so that poses the problem of what you gonna do with all the prisoners in the prissons .. retrial them to get them changed over to a mental hospital? .. i don’t think that can happen in our justice system .. so the only way would be to build more mental hospitals .. and thats not gonna happen as we can’t afford to build new prrissons .. so we not gonna have monney to build more mental hospitals for criminals … especialy in this climet …. so basicaly what i am saing is even if it was a better idea to put people like him in mental hospital i don’t think there is any way we could physicaly change the way things are at the moment to alow this to happen… atleast not for a long time.
