TBH I suspect a lot of US geniuses (if not working on top secret Pentagon projects or at Google so you don’t hear about them) emigrate to Europe or Asia these days as current US culture seems to value short term commercial gains over anything else; research and scholarship take time and don’t deliver immediate profits. this seems to be recent though; since the early 1990s. it seems a lot of research centres in the USA have been closed or heavily downsized over the years…
the US does still have at least one black professor and his skills are in proper electronics as well as software (he has become head professor at the same University he attended as an undergraduate!)
