Plus prohibition led to the invention of the cocktail! Who knows what we could invent this time…bacon bathtub gin?

As much as I fear contradicting you the policy was based on sound medical advice and research. It was the medical industry who were calling strongly for a price rise. That’s not to say it will end alcoholism or anything like that.

It’d probably provoke more crime, an addict will find a way to get what they want no matter what it takes, there’s no chance they’ll go without it if they need it!

Possibly but its not really targeted at heavily addicted people who are likely to commit crime its more working class people on low incomes who drink too much every night I would think. On average they would end up drinking a bit less and a bit less over a large population would make a big difference. And any increase in crime would have to be balanced against the money it saves the NHS.

A lot of those working class people would surely just turn to the illegal shit though surely.

maybe the younger ones? I don’t really know. Its not like the idea was to make alcohol unaffordable just subtly incentivise people to drink a bit less. *shrugs* I really don’t know.

In the summer down here it is probably one of the best places to be a junkie.
You can just sit on the beach all day and visit our lovely parks with plenty of drunk and high holiday folk/ students to party with.
I used to live opposite one of the buisiest gay bars in the county and all I heard was belching (from the local begger) bitch fights (from the bar) and deliveries (from tescos and the bar) maybe the occasional ‘wheres the next party attt!’
I asked him to tone the belching down once but I think he forgot. (we where playing chess together on the pavement)

    I do miss it.
It was great when I first moved to brighton one summer, I was in awe of the vibrancy of brighton I didn’t mind the lack of sleep too much.
Also home of my favourite pub.

The bulk of working class people (even if they disagree with the current Government and tolerate moderate drinking and drug use) aren’t rebellious to the point of being sociopathic, nor reckless or suicidal.

most aren’t going to suddenly start on illegal drugs because its “too expensive to drink” as there has been 30 years of a mainstream drug/booze culture in the UK and especially young folk are more clued up about the risks.

however Cameroon may have realised that we are now in the EU whether or not he likes it, that travel to Southern Europe is affordable, and minimum unit prices will only result in widespread evasion of duty in favour of purchasing alcohol in foreign lands, which means all that lovely money going into the Eurozone rather than staying in Blighty.
