  • Then the day terror came and hit scandinavia big time. First a bomb(in Oslo’s ministry quarter) blast then shooting at a youth-camp for Arbeiderpartiets Ungdoms Fylkning, the youth organisation of the governing party, Arbeiderpartiet(labour). The shooter is arrested. We the public have not been told who is behind it but police spokesman says those two attacks is related. Death toll for the bomb is atm 7 and for the shooting 9. several is severe injured.

Being a norwegian in exile this hits me as well, I am a sad man now.

My thought goes to the families that lost their loved ones and to them who are at ‘touch and go’ in this moment at the hospital. May U all live through this.

    sinner

This is fucked up man. What has Norway done to deserve such an atrocity? 🙁

Although being born English I am unfortunately much more “used” to bombs and terrorism in my country (since age 8 I used to see news about them, and narrowly escaped a IRA one in the early 1990s when I lived in London) – when I became more politically aware about Europe in my teens and learned about Scandinavia, I always admired the way that people in Scandinavian countries seemed to live peacefully together, even of opposing political views.

It seemed that until now, folk rich and poor seemed to mingle in the streets and violence was usually rare – it is not just lives lost here, but your country’s “innocence”. Well that is how BBC said it but I do not think that is the right word as “innocence” it implies weakness/vulnerability – I always thought nations like Norway were stronger for having that tolerance and consensus-led democracy rather than everyone turning to violence – but sadly it takes only a few angry people to destroy it.

Similar things happened in NL too a few years back (with assassinations of politicians etc) and it has also permanently changed the attitudes of people.

in my own life (with less than 10 years between each incident) London got bombed by IRA, then by hard right wingers, then by Muslim extremists – and yes it has a permanent effect on us English, it is why we are often angry and mistrusting in public places and large groups. In my town over 100km from London, when a homeless or forgetful person leaves a bag of clothes unattended within about 30 minutes the special police and armed units and bomb disposal are onto it and half of town evacuated.

There is no easy solution here – I appreciate how hard it will be for people in NO as they will have to abandon some of their freedom even if it means just more CCTV everywhere and more security to government buildings – but the best thing we can do for all the families caught up in these incidents is to “fight for peace” – to preserve a multicultural, democratic Europe which allows free expression but leaves no room for violence and extremism from any quarter.

Its confirmed now that the arrested shooter is norwegian. 22 hard injured youths until now has arrived at the hospitals, several youths are still missing. It happen on a island in big lake so the logistics have been difficult.

    bad times

That shoot out is now a plain massacre at least 80 dead…..and the arrested is a extreme right wing.
( the confirmed number ended at 69 at youth camp and 8 by the bomb blast in total 77 RIP)

🙁 just seen this on the news

fuckiin hell, 80 dead….whats Norways like, corperate punishment system like? Cause over here he’d get a relative slap on the wrist and told not to do it again, all the while serving a ‘live sentance’ of 15years….and getting out after 7 for good behaviour…..

i saw this when i was waiting for my flight 🙁 it’s so awful that people will treat other humans like that.

you been reading the daily mail? serial killers and mass murders do not get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again…

A crime like that would get a whole life sentence across all of Europe. Even in England (and I study crime reports very closely) the minimum tarrif for a single premeditated murder is about 20 years and for more than 2 people killed its a whole life sentence.

Unfortunately as soon as I read that the attacker was “tall and blond” I suspected extreme right wing, particularly as Norway is one of the few remaining “left wing” countries in Europe – it has not had as heavy a shift to the right despite the economic depression – and their hard right parties have very few supporters compared to other European nations where they have been elected to power.

even the fact they have a outdoor youth meeting for the Labour Party is a really old skool socialist thing to do, it is what myself and sinner would have heard about as young lads 20-25 years ago – I didn’t even think any country still did such a thing!

Gosh – saw the devestation on the news,

    and it looked utterly terrifying,

poor people and the friends and family of those left behind :((

    so so sad

no country or people deserves it but the harsh realities are that every modern nation has an “achilles heel” that a particularly angry individual can exploit – society has to balance security with freedom of movement and not living in a fortress…

many attackers are not stupid knuckle draggers from low income estates.

The Norway attacker had University education, business skills (he was very pro capitalism and free markets), was physically strong and fit, appears to have a background in agriculture and had exploited the trust of society to supposedly set up an organic farm serving to the Oslo area (not an uncommon thing to do in these eco-aware days) – in May he bought 6 000 kg of fertiliser – but who would question a farmer buying this at the start of the growing season? especially a young entrepreneur who had never been in trouble with the Police before?

Incidentally for those who are not aware of Norway’s wider politics, they have practices even we in England would consider extremely politically correct- for instance some percentage of all company bosses must be women – and the fact that NO is still quite a socialist but economically successful country is hated by right wingers the world over… (in particular the Christian Right of the USA).

The attacker has also had links with England’s EDL (whom he clearly admires) and advised them on tactics…
