LONDON (Reuters) – Labels on all alcoholic drinks are to carry health warnings by the end of next year, the government announced on Monday.
Under an agreement between the government and the drinks industry, the new labels will include details on how many alcoholic units each drink contains and the recommended safe drinking levels for men and women.
Binge drinking, consuming 10 or more units in one session for men and seven or more for women, is a major public health concern. More than 7.1 million people are hazardous or harmful drinkers, according to official figures.
:laugh_at: Now I am looking forward to seeing these labels on my pint in the pub:crazy_diz
that is well pointless :you_crazy
aint gunna stop every kid whose 12-13 drinkin whatever they get their hands on is it, won’t stop seasoned drinkers either :laugh_at:
guilty!:crazy_dru
Its pointless.
Anyway the powers that be, Dept of Health, NHS and loads of other health experts, have recently been discussing raising the units per week limits.
Its been discovered that basically people lie (there’s a surprise). The units limits were based on reported alcoholic consumption linked to liver, kidney etc disease.
It’s been revealed that these guestimates are off simply due to the fact that when people with such problems are asked, ‘how much do you drink?’ they tell porkies. They say 5 pints instead of 12, or a few whiskeys instead of a bottle a day.
Its been put up for discussion, within the halls of power; DoH, NHS, Gov etc (not the public forum as far as i know) about what to do with this information and basically the conclusions so far are, dont tell em (ie the public).
The argument is lie to the public for their own protection hmmmmm . . .not sure I approve:head_bang
I’m sure they’ve had the unit count on bottles for some time now?
Ironically the only place where I would regularly indulge in anything approaching binge-drinking is when I worked in a central Government Department and we had a staff bar that sold drinks at cost price (this was actually because of Government integrity rules as it would have been thought of as unethical to use public resources to make a profit selling beer)
As you would expect those of us working in the Finance department realised it was cheaper to drink here first than in the local pubs :laugh_at:
Yeah i am sure bottles do, me last bottle of spirit had how many units were in the whole bottle. Makes you realise you are never really too truthfull when asked roughly how many units you drink in a week :crazy_dru
