  • I think I am going to start as sitting in all the time is not good for the mind or the CV. Getting a job is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare. Thinking drug and alcohol services as that’s what I know about and would like to do something that interests me.

yes, but as an engineer for the local community radio station. its not all dance music there and a lot of the shows are for older people and indie rockers and hipsters but its good to meet a different mix of people there.

    do you find it fulfilling?

I was looking into doing some hospital radio stuff actually but not sure I am chatty enough.

yes as its what I once used to do as a paid job but with slightly less stress. Although I might at some time present a show on there that means more committment and I already have a day job with long hours.

There may be community broadcasters in your area (look on the ofcom website as they are all listed there) and these usually always need volunteers especially in the daytime.

    cheers GL will do

I used to run a music school for underprivileged children in Brazil. Volunteering is awesome. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces is one of the best things ever. I’m sure you can find something that suits you in your area. Just pick something that you want to work on and look it up. Dedicated volunteers are always a big plus for these organisations.

I’ve done volunteer work off my own back when i was on the dole because i didn’t want to start going down the slippery slope… y’know the one..
And my advice is to find what you’re interested in for sure, as you said.
My experience from volunteering (quite a few years ago now) I was helping out at a vets as i was sure i wanted to be one, but after doing so i realised it wasn’t my path (went on to earn a living at some scabby newsagents)
The second time i went on the dole i did volunteering in taking disabled people out swimming..
I was about 20 years old by this point, and that’s when i found my career, swim teaching 🙂 (not specifically disabled people though)
And i moved on to study that whilst working a shitty job to pay for the qualifications..
Hope this helps you decide what to do photo dude, good luck and it is a great thing to do not only for others but for yourself too.

I’ve volunteered loads in the past, for the British Red Cross (fund raising, old people’s day centre : bingo caller, taking the elderly out on day trips), charity shop, lunch group, bingo caller again there,

Cleaning up waterways, with a local community group

but the main one I did every school / college holiday was 2 different ‘play /respite’ schemes for children with mental disabilities, and the other for children with physical disabilities.
Absolutely loved it, loved the kids especially and did it from age 13-21, and ended up getting paid for it for the last few years as the council took it on and made it a ‘training type scheme’

I now work full time, and it can be pretty stressful so I value my time off, but its something I’d defiantly do if I was unemployed or worked a couple of days only as I think others have said : being out of work can be soul destroying and a slippery slope and volunteering can give you a sense of purpose, achievement, pleasure and can sometimes lead to paid work

But defo get something you are interested in, as otherwise the initial excitment may wear off

Grabbed an article today to do with volunteering as a ‘friend’ for older people who live alone, where you’d go for 1 or 2 hours and just chat with them. Im gunna apply this week, fingers crossed for a war vet!

Did some at a plant nursery a while back too, when i was unemployed for abit longer than id hoped. Was really good to get outside and do some manual labour id reccomend that if your brain is starting to go mushy. Didnt stick around that long as i got a job that meant i couldnt go anymore, kinda wish i had though as one of the full time workers was a mushroom expert!

    Wow, good for you!
Some Old people are great, so many stories,

I go down the pub with these 2 67 yr olds, from my art class, and we get proper pissed up, one used to live in a squat just off carnaby st in the 60’s and the other found out her dad was a Gi, and she recently met all her American family and they are still so full of life and fun! Not like going down the pub with my 66yr old mum, she’s great in her own way, but not as many experiences as these 2!! :p
