They do have a very big following in Asian and Middle Eastern countries at the moment as trance somehow slips through the censors and does not seem to conflict with the powerful faith groups there (probably also because its lyrics are less agreessive than urban/rap music or punk which are as popular in the East as in the West). Both AVB and Ferry Corsten played in venues in Malaysia in the last two years, when I was last there as recently as the 1990s the thought of a Western DJ playing music even vaguely linked to drugs would be unheard of.
Ironically when I tuned into two big Dutch stations they were bigging up AVB for some win a holiday to Ibiza competition but didn’t play any tracks by him and mostly pop dance and urban (might as well have been Kiss FM here were it not for the presenters speaking Dutch).
Yeah the free party culture definitely counts.
Oh well down here when I was at school, there was a radio show called Terry Garoghans last bus to whitehawk where he did an excellent job of making each housing estate feel segregated by singing songs about certain areas

just looked him up and though “zoo format” radio (presenters trying to be wacky) was getting tired by the 2000s and there were a shit ton of such presenters his material wasn’t too bad for the era.
Some of his jingles are quite funny, though paraphrasing what Capital DJ’s were doing in the 80s, not surprising he got laid off when Capital took his station over. it does work in local areas but today if a presenter trys that today on a local commercial radio station they just get sacked for “alienating listeners and reducing potential advertiser reach” and even on community stations you’ve got to be very careful about making fun of any group of people as if just one listener complains its a full investigation (ofcom log tapes copied, station manager has to go through them and make a report).
I’ve had to do a few such “forensic” copies of ofcom logs over the months for ICR-FM – its part of my rôle but it means I find it really hard to be close friends with anyone at the station as if they are presenters I could be helping investigate them tomorrow, same as at work and with telecoms/network intercepts, I try to be a decent person and 100% honest with people so I have to keep a professional distance to safeguard my own integrity and sanity….
wierd though as even today stations are allowed phoneins with people angry about everything especially immigrants, the presenters wind them up (even though I suspect a lot of them harbour similar views) and provided no one actually says “bloody wogs and pakis” its viewed as “robust debate and free speech” but a comedy song or a mistimed (but not intentionally malicious) joke can fuck up someones career – and then they wonder why younger people don’t listen to the radio any more other than music stations…

I was also a big red dwarf fan way back when the original series’s were still being filmed (5 and 6 i mean not the first series) When they finally launched series 7 I saw it had turned to crap.
I’m going to see Craig Charles next month at a local venue. Saw him last year at the same venue. He does a kick ass funk and soul set. Posted a few pics; don’t know if you saw them. I’ll be sure to get more this year to prove it.

Well the station this show was on (southern FM) was owned by capital and i’m pretty sure it was just a copy cat format of the show you are talking about.
Oh speaking of angry people, I used to love listening to the LBC when I was driving though london on the way to work.
I thought the jingle where the “yoof” rappers say “he’s bald as a coot, so give him a cone!” (as in a traffic cone, for improvised headwear) was excellent :laugh_at:
The term “big cult” is an oxymoron.
A cult, is by definition, not mainstream. Beyond a certain size a cult becomes mainstream.
Sorry. Harry Potter is not a cult now. It’s a commercial brand. Live with it.
Read LOTR a lot as a child but haven’t felt the need to read it since being a teenager. Nowadays Terry Pratchett satisfies my cravings for outrageous fantasy… sad but true.
Some people describe scientology as a cult. I do not have a view on the matter myself but that’s just what I read on the internet.
cult
/kəlt/
Noun
A system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
Synonyms
worship – religion – adoration
I’d describe psychology and psychiatry as cults. Pretty much zero double blind testing, it’s all based on opinions of observations.
That doesn’t mean they don’t work, just that they very little hard facts to offer on WHY they work sometimes… although hopefully with MRI nerve scanning technology the science will actually get discovered and proven.

Yeah, so all above metioned are cults 🙂
I am starting cult of log, every tuesday we must write our cult names on a log, sprinkle it with nutmeg and chant ‘humanah humanah hamanah’ and throw it on a fire.
Only those who have met the 21st kevel of psychedelia may meet the log.

I’m in!
Do we get to sacrifice virgins under a full moon?
