  • It’s interesting, but I always have trouble understanding what the sentences mean, the ones where you have to agree/disagree/slightly agree/slightly disagree etc. …maybe I’m just dumb :weee:

yeah, i did glaze over at that point, which might not have helped things…

i thought the first bit wasd good tho. i read that 80% of white americans show a preference for, well.. white americans, and 40 or 50% of black americans show a preference for, u guessed it… white americans!

    which is bad really…

    Your Result

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for African American compared to European American.

    i dont really get it…

just seems like button pushing exercise that sort of luls you into a pattern then changes it, and you’ve pressed the button before you have time to think about it, but i guess thats the point.. anyway.

Your data suggests a moderate automatic preference for Black people over White people

Your data suggests a strong automatic preference for Barack Obama over John McCain

well, we are doing v well now. i’ve just checked and its not 80% of whites show preference for whites, its more than 80% of everyone who has ever taken the test, ended up having pro-white associations.

that includes 50% of approx 50,000 black people who have taken the test so far…

Mahzarin Banjani, who teaches psychology at Harvard and is one of the leaders in IAT research says “You don’t choose to make positive associations with the dominant group. But you are required to. All around you that group is being paired with good things. You open the newspaper and you turn on the TV, and you can’t escape it.”

so what does that mean about my result?

Who gives a fuck? Boring boring…

I’m unconvinced this test is accurate. Using “good” and “bad” as opposed to any other adjective, doesn’t conclude anything.

Though I’m gonna be loads freaked out if I see any of those people again

weell, err, i feel a bit like Mystic Meg now… surely it was a good result for ya? i wish i had done that well. :hopeless:

There are several thoughts that occur tho, maybe…

1 Ur not as influenced by the mainstream media as some of us!

    or

2 the Obama effect! seems a bit unlikely.

    or

3 i think there is an issue surrounding reaction time, i think the quicker u react, the less likely it is that ur conscious brain is gonna get involved. Thats why it goes on about not worrying about makin mistakes, cos they want you to be as quick as possible. If i’d thought about my answers long enough, i would hope i would have got a ‘better’ result.

    or

4 Maybe you could try it again if u r skeptical about your result. It should be reasonably consistent over a number of goes, according to the documentation. Also, u could do it with the other start point, altho the info i have already posted suggests its not that big an issue.

    or

5 maybe the results profile would be different in the UK, therefore ur result would be more ‘normal’ (!).

    or

    6 wilful contrarianism! 😉

err… i can probly think of more stuff, if i think a bit harder, which i will do if u wanna respond. I’m not sayin this test is the last word or anything, but i think it is measuring something that is interesting.

    To me anyway! :laugh_at:

Its a measure of association, rather than a ’cause and effect’ thing… so it will never absolutely ‘prove’ anything.

I’m not quite sure i understand ur point, i think the test is trying to associate positive and negative feelings toward different groups in society, and seems to work on gender, sexuality, etc, etc, as well as race.

If the adjectives were different, you would be looking at some other association, which is fine, if you can think of a reason for doing so.
