BBC News – Julian Assange: Ecuador grants Wikileaks founder asylum

Julian Assange granted asylum by Ecuador – live coverage | Media | guardian.co.uk

Earlier, the UK Foreign Office warned it could lift the embassy’s diplomatic status to fulfil a “legal obligation” to extradite the 41-year-old by using the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987.

That allows the UK to revoke the diplomatic status of an embassy on UK soil, which would potentially allow police to enter the building to arrest Mr Assange for breaching the terms of his bail.

    13:07 BST
My colleague Rajeev Syal has just been at a briefing with Ecuadorean officials inside the embassy. The government of the South American country believes the British government has launched a campaign of intimidation against the embassy, he reports. An official told him:

We are very surprised and disappointed. There was clear intimidation of the embassy. The Ecuadorean government has been clear from the start that we were seeking diplomatic assurances within international law.

The Ecuadorean officials said they had been particularly surprised by yesterday’s development because they had been involved in ongoing negotiations over Assange with Britain until that point.

But the letter received in Quito and the arrival of a large police presence at the embassy in Knightsbridge yesterday was a marked changed in approach, they said.

They are still promising a big announcement before 4pm British time.

    14:49 BST
The diplomatic row between the UK and Ecuador is really shaping this story today. According to the New York Times, just before the announcement, President Rafael Correa declared:

No one is going to terrorize us!

On Wednesday, Mr. Patiño, the foreign minister, said that the British authorities had threatened to barge into the country’s embassy in London if officials did not hand over Mr. Assange. “Today we have received from the United Kingdom an explicit threat in writing that they could assault our embassy in London if Ecuador does not hand over Julian Assange,” Mr. Patiño said at a news conference in Quito, adding defiantly, “We are not a British colony.”

    !

Good for him!!! Down with the fascist regime of america. One day the usa will burn and nobody will help them

I bet Julian is listening to this track.

Britain has stormed a foreign embassy before, when I was a boy (a lot of you probably weren’t born). the SAS were used, not metpol. but this was because terrorists had already stormed it first and taken hostages of the embassy staff and a British copper, and had killed a hostage. The SAS were successful in their objectives (they got most of the rest of the hostages released by killing the terrorists, one was riddled with multiple magazines full of bullets)

Even then over the years there were many reprisals, led to anti-UK terrorists sharing skills and tactics leading to bombing campaigns that lasted the bulk of my adult life and ultimately cost British people a large chunk of their freedom and millions of pounds of taxpayers money, as well as pushed the world towards a more authoritarian type of government.

to try and nick Assange (who has not committed any major crime on UK soil, I don’t think he even got that many British secrets because those spies/diplomats from UK with brains don’t trust flaky Yank comms systems) would look arse about face to say the least and make Britain even more unsafe. and it would be more stupidity than conspiracy but I wouldn’t put it past the current elected government…

    Fuckin yank government…..

Well I don’t know what to believe when it comes to the the “assassination of julian assange” and all that. The whole thing is impossible for an avarage joe like me to get to the bottom of. So I guess I will probably never know if he is a good guy or just out for his own personal success. I know the other fellow who he started it with who helped found open leaks, ( Daniel Domscheit-Berg ) says he is a narcissistic ego mad bully (I don’t know if that was his exact words) But there’s no evidence to say that this is part of the character assassination campaign. Who knows eh. will wikkileaks ever return to the hight it was at back in its hay day or are we doomed for more bulshit about assange living his life on the run cos TBH its abit borring innit LOL

Personally I say don’t believe a word of anything you read or see in the media. It’s all edited to give a mind numbingly biased view. Better to just believe what you feel and think is right.

I don’t give it long before he magically dies in a freak plane/car crash or is shot by ‘an unknown assailant’ who happens to work for the ununited states of ameoba.

Well according to the conspiracy theorists these days, you have less chance of being taken out because it makes it look like you were telling the truth. After all the “they” have kinda milked that cow to death. Now “they” try to find other ways of shutting people up, like character assassination or according to that area 51 guy who was full of shit, bob lazzar, they will erase your education and employment history so it looks like your not really a nuclear physicist or a super brainy engineer after all. LOL

the NTL salesman in my old city was a scientist or something brainy in his country (some African nation) and he got in bother so they just revoked his degree and he ended up as first an asylum seeker but then managed to get a work permit..

So your saying he should just stick it out, seek asylum then work for ntl? :laugh_at:

unfortunately that won’t work any more. The cost of infrastructure provision near bankrupted NTL (hence why Branson got it cheap) and they don’t even have the cash to cable up South Oxon (just outside Reading) or Mid Suffolk (outside Ipswich) let alone Ecuador… plus it was sending the data over insecure cables what got everyone in this pickle in the first place…

    Ah……fair enough then. Talk talk?

might actually be feasible depending who owns cable and wireless nowadays – seriously I could actually see Assange becoming something like a telecoms salesman once all the fuss has blown over as his lifestyles don’t seem to fit someone what would say on the dole, the whole wikileaks story will go stale media wise (in reality its due to old skool security procedures not being followed) and he is going to have to earn money somehow….

Once the media finds something new to shove done our throats, he just reverts back to being another geezer on the street earning his pennies….

Operation Nimrod took place with the full consent of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Government, and the MetPol had to hand over control of the operation to the SAS before they could act.

They did plenty of pre-planning and rehearsals before they acted, mind you, but I don’t see how that connects with the Assange situation – the owners of the embassy, Ecuador, have not give permission for entry and they don’t have to. If the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) want to revoke diplomatic relations then enter, they can do so. But it won’t make any friends, certainly in South America. No diplomatic relations + no recognition is technically a state of war.

And it says an awful lot for the accuracy of WikiLeaks that Julian Assange’s website was taken off the WWW servers and forced to go underground by the US State Department.

It also says a lot for the dysfunctional Swedish rape laws, but hey, Assange went there, he should have known how dirty organisations like the US Federal Government operate. ESPECIALLY after reading their message traffic. If you want to metaphorically wrestle with a giant sized pig, expect to get covered in shit.
