For the past forty years Noam Chomsky’s writings on politics and language have established him as a preeminent public intellectual and as one of the most original and wide-ranging political and social critics of our time. Among the seminal figures in linguistic theory over the past century, since the 1960s Chomsky has also secured a place as perhaps the leading dissident voice in the United States.

Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor emeritus of linguistics at MIT and the author of numerous books including Chomsky vs. Foucault: A Debate on Human Nature, On Language, Objectivity and Liberal Scholarship, and Towards a New Cold War (all published by The New Press). He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This event took place on April 22, 2008 at the Google Cambridge office, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

WTF? that has to be the stupidest attempt at a smear campaign I have ever heard of…

Chomsky was born to Jewish parents in the East Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Hebrew scholar and IWW member William Chomsky (1896–1977), who was from a town in Ukraine.

In 1979, Robert Faurisson, a French literary critic and professor of literature, published two letters in Le Monde which included claims that the gas chambers used by the Nazis to exterminate the Jews did not exist.[29] The outrage caused by Faurisson’s writings resulted in his conviction for defamation and subjection to a fine and prison sentence. Serge Thion, a French libertarian socialist scholar and Holocaust denier, asked Chomsky to lend his signature to a petition which supported Faurisson’s right of academic freedom. Many French intellectualsI][URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Avoid_weasel_words”%5D%5BCOLOR=#0000ff%5Dwho?%5B/COLOR%5D%5B/URL%5D%5B/I considered this petition to be a legitimization of Faurisson’s denial of the Holocaust, and a misrepresentation of Faurisson’s credentials and intentions. Having signed the petition Chomsky wrote an essay [30] which was heavily critical of the French intellectual response. In this essay Chomsky determined that Faurisson was “a relatively apolitical liberal of some sort” but felt that this was irrelevant when defending absolute freedom of speech. Faurisson’s editors subsequently used this essay as a preface to Mémoire en défense, Faurisson’s book intended to defend his controversial views.

I’m with Chomsky on this, Free speech needs to be protected no matter the subject.

I’d rather live in a country with horrible bastards say nasty things (the BNP for example) than in one where ‘inappropriate’ mutterings result in a prison sentence.

agreed, but you have to watch for those who abuse free speech to make us give away our freedom (like the extreme right) or damage a good cause by a bad choice of words

“propaganda spin” is powerful – Hitler did after all come to power in a democratic european nation due to his spin and bad economic conditions..

I’ve shortly got an exam on the Weimar Republic. It’s amazing how millions of normal people were persuaded by Goebbles’s evil genius.

I heard something freaky on radio 4 the other day.
They were talking about it being 75 years since the NSDAP held it’s first book buring ceremony.

One such ‘un-german’ piece of work they threw onto the fire read…

“Where they burn books, so to will they in the end burn human beings”
