would i be able to connect a record player through AUX or something to me hi-fi? it’s got AUX input but i’m unsure as to what can be connected through it, i lost the manual. it’s a panasonic, if it helps.

me old man keeps gettin in an arse with me using his record player all the time :laugh_at:

You should be able to connect anything BUT turntables,which need amplification…

Amp to Aux in on your comp.

you may be able to google a “software preamp” which will negate the use of an amp Ie Deck to Aux in on the computer.

You can plug the turntable straight into the aux input on your hi-fi but it will be very quiet cos the output of a turntable is much lower than the line level the aux input will expect. Really you need to connect the deck to a pre-amp though – they come built into some hifis and all dj mixers and can be bought as a separate unit for rip-off prices from wanky hifi shops. The pre-amp simply amplifies the low-level output from a deck so that it is at line level – the same sort of level you would expect from a cd player/tuner etc. You won’t break anything by plugging the deck into the aux in on your hifi so just try it, if its too quiet you’ll know why.

as other ppl have said the impedance is different, lik if u were going to plug ur electric geetar into ur computer, u would first need to change the impedance, by, either a pre amp, pre amp software, you might be able to get away with using a DI BOX, or some type of effects pedal for guitars that have DI preferences inbuilt. You will have to check with that one tho.

i got another question, it may sound stupid but i’m new to vinyl cos obviously my generation is all cd/mp3 – how do i tell what rpm a record plays at? i recently bought the audion remix of hot chip’s no fit state on 12″ single, my dad’s record player only plays 33rpm, would it be 45rpm? is there like a rule where you can tell just by looking at a vinyl what rpm it is?

all modern records either spin at 33 or 45rpm. 45rpm is more common for 12″ but you do get both speeds, sometimes different speeds on each side or a record

its not uncommon too for tunes to be mislabelled or not labelled at all (promo/white labels), so its sometimes a matter of using whichever speed sounds right…..

12″ (and 7″ and 10″) singles are played at 45

12″ albums will be 33

way to tell is by listening

ok cool thanks glo and GL. so it won’t fuck the record player and/or vinyl itself up by playin it at the wrong rpm accidentally?

no, although it will make you look foolish if you do it in the middle of your set.. :laugh_at:

I’ve found one I reckon, Bush MTT1, it’s cheap, pretty compact and has a pre-amp thing I think. Hopefully it’ll do for me to listen to me records, while I save up for a pair of turntables and someone to show me the ropes at college!
