to save money? there spending £2.1 billion. thats not saving money. i know the old saying spend money to make money, but this is retarded

£2.1bn isn’t a huge amount of money in the scheme of things. I’ve got the government’s spending figures for 2007/8 on my computer and apparently total benefit spending for that year was £125.3bn (granted, £57.6bn of that was on pensions, I guess they’re not included in the proposals). Of course it depends whether spending that £2.1bn is going to make any real improvement, otherwise it’s a lot of money to put down the toilet in anyone’s language.

i suppose but, to be fair, this country needs all the cash it can get, so why spend what it doesn’t have?

There’s a programme on channel 4 right this moment that’s pissing me off. It’s about how increasing public spending doesn’t work, and it’s just about the most right-wing programme I’ve ever seen on terrestrial TV. Check it out.

Edit: Just finished watching. It basically seemed to say that the UK is nearly as bad as communist Russia, we should scrap the NHS, sack most of the public sector and return to the 19th century, when Britain ruled the world. It featured various greasy city-boy types and such impartial guests as Neil Hamilton and Vanessa Feltz.

Channel 4 used to be part of ITV but was nationalised in the 1990s by a Tory Government! This was almost certainly done in order to buy more editorial control) as they were genuinely shocked at the “yoof TV” and other rebellious content being produced.

My only worry is that at the moment councils are trying to save money , i hope they dont use this to lay off council workers and replace them with unemployed work force . As long as no one losses their job , so some council can make a quick saving then its all good .

this is the real risk – especially if Councils try to do this the quality of their services will decline and lead to more unneeded hostility against the public sector..

Where the minimum wage legislation is circumvented so the unemployed end up working for around £1per hour….

*Devil’s advocate* In the context of JSA alone or as a consideration of all the benefits being received?
