(ok not the easiest to set up but once I got it running right it pisses all over windows, plus no need for anti virus – you can get it but its really for out going files to protect windows users)

You don’t need virus’ when your computer is a rag bag mess of home coded hacked drivers and software.

Installing a new piece of hardware is enough to destroy most linux installs.

If you know what your doing, linux DOES piss all over windows.

personally i have dual boot windows 7 and Back|Track 4

    runs like a beast.

    For what application?

I can’t think of a single thing that it does better.

well for a start it uses a fuck of a lot less coding lines to do exactly the same task as windows so runs a shit load faster with everything u do on it

even with WINE, some programs that were DESIGNED to be ran on windows run better on linux. not to mention the fact that linux is free, its all open source and it doesnt support massive multinational corporations around the world such as microsoft which represent everything which is wrong with western society. BUT we wont go there…..

pretty much any program which you can get on windows, you can get on linux OR an open source program which does the same thing.

spybot and avira[free download version] is what we use and its a very good combination as the av is a small processor footprint and very effective

When I changed my OS over from windows my PC started booting faster, ran faster and looked a lot nicer than windows.. Any software I want to use is free and is all available to download from a nice little menu.

If I cant find something I need I just download a windows app and run that.. very good for a free bit of software

    Less system intensive, open source.

    – good for use in remote dedicated servers as majority of linux is command line based, windows does obviously have this feature but everyone is used to GUI

    – building on the aforementioned point, many server applications have only a linux version available.

    – For linux there is WINE to emulate windows programs (albeit with a few faults sometimes), there is no counterpart the other way round..

    – doesnt crash and burn as often

    – the logo (penguin) kicks windows ass

    – im running out of ideas

I’m not going to quote everyone but I hopefully will address all your points.

    1) Linux may run faster but I think you will find by the time you fuck with it enough to get the level of support that you would get on a windows machine that is no longer true.

By that I mean enabling you to use almost any pnp device, install almost anything and deal with almost any format.

It is much like the old mac’s never crash argument. They never used to because they were targeting a very specific audience with a limited peripheral and program spectrum> Nowadays as they try and support everything they get slower and crash more and more frequently (I use pre intel and intel macs at work and the difference in stability is massive).

    2) I refuse to believe that WINE is better in any way than running a program in it’s native state. I have extensive experience with crossfire and it’s buggy and annoying and often very difficult to use external hardware from an emulated environment. I haven’t tried WINE but I’ll stock a spare HDD in over the next couple days and try it.

What linux distro should I try? Haven’t delved deeply since Ubuntu about 6 years ago.

    3) I do not want to use open source programs for everything. I do use them where they are better but if people have to use the “it’s better because it’s not sucking corporate cock” argument then it’s blatantly not better.

e.g GIMP it’s fucking gash. I used to use it because I refused to get photoshop because I wanted to support open source. I then gave in and realised that all GIMP is is a clunky rehash of photoshop, which at best is copies features well from photoshop. Not the innovative free thinking open source project I was promised from my UNIX obsessed friends.

Also open office same shit. Just looks like someone repackaged office 95. Nothing new or special.

I want the best program and I don’t give a fuck who made it and unfortunately I have yet to find an open source one that really wins.

    4) Emulating linux programs on PC impossible ey? andLinux.org — Run Linux natively inside Windows Been about for years.

    5) Yes it is good for servers but I thought we were talking about as a home OS.

    6) I have seen more people (in percentage terms) whose linux installs fuck completely than with windows. My PC is constantly evolving (the only thing still in it from when I first built this one is my mobo) and every time I’ve met someone who does this with linux their world falls apart every new component they insert.

Anyway I’m hungover as shit so hopefully this makes sense and if I’ve missed any points I’ll get round to it.

good points you raised mr retardo… though i was talking in context of servers, but very good points!

PS id rather be taken by a gimp than have to use gimp it sucks..

pss, my case is the only bit that remains from when i first built this one, but the mobo and processor has just died 🙁

Im using Kaspersky IS with a crack 😉

But uhm in my opinion Antivira crushes AVG..

I suppose it depends on what you use your PC for, and its probably 6 and half a dozen in some aspects. Im not going to go ahead and say that windows sucks, linux is perfect. because its not (i use both windows and various linux distros), but id certainly say that we should do everything we can to encourage these sorts of projects. If all software had been open source from the word go, then im sure we would be a lot further forward in some aspects than we are now.
WINE is not perfect, in fact for most programs iv tried it crap to say the least, but theoretically it should be possible for any windows program to work with it just as fast as it would with any windows machine, so i support the WINE development team.
As far as linux installs fucking up, id say that was more to do with uninformed people who arnt really sure what they are doing, as most linux support forums mostly presume your somewhat familiar with the basics of bash and the likes.
The only reason that hardware upgrades can be a problem with any linux based machine is because they are running on hacked drivers as it is, because god forbid there was any sort of progression in linux, theres too many companies sucking microsofts cock for that.
Id also say that referring to “Linux” as one entity is not something i would encourage, as distros can differ almost as much as Mac and Windows do.

The best way to protect your computer is not to fix it if it ain’t broken.Lol.
Installing security software is an option but you still never know when and where it is safe to get it. These AV`s are all free and good. I prefer AVG, been using it for 3 years with no problem.
    Free antivirus – Avira AntiVir
AVG Free – Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows 7, Vista and XP

iv used AVG on my windows machines for years. its fantastic.
