  • was intending to go to this.. only just found out about it being cancelled.. bit of a shitter TBH

    http://www.big-green-gathering.com/

Tbh never heard of this before but why have the powers that be cancelled this event? :you_crazy

the website only says that both the local council and police authority combined forces to have it stopped.. Always seemed like a good spirited festival so not sure what the actual problem is

its been going a while now but is relatively low key.. it was referred to as the brown gathering after glasto style downpours a few years back

    edit

this provides a bit more info…good ole elf n safety:yawn:

lot more involved than health and safety, the cops/authorities didn’t want this even happening due to its political nature –

paradoxically loads of quasi-commercial electronic dance music events in the same area have been permitted to carry on….

OK there have been some people at BGG what might have been aligned with the more extremist “yoghurt weaver” protests but there is no overt health and safety threat whatsoever posed to the area in which the BGG is held in, and many dance music events have far more incidents/casualties than BGG

how many of you are aware of the concept of “panem et circenses” (Bread and Circuses) in the Roman Empire?

the reason we were given down here by the local OB was that the BGG didn’t correct the safety concerns in the licence, the reason given by the organiser was that two groups considered extremist by the OB where holding a demonstration, the organiser stated it was political pressure because on of the groups has used direct action at Heathrow and the other was at the g20 protests, either way its a bit of a shitter was looking forward to it!

I may be wrong but isnt that using handouts to gain support instead of proper policy?? now used to criticise politicians and supporters for given up there duty?

yes, a mixture of handouts and entertainment – but this is what seems to have actually happened here.

all the hedonistic dance music based festivals are still allowed to continue (the circuses), OK its not quite handouts and that they are paid for by the state – in some ways the opposite with the Council recovering the money with people paying fuckloads of money for tickets (half of which goes to the feds) and having to run the gauntlet of sniffer dogs etc and some actually having to shove their drugs up their arses like they were going to prison!!

but BGG which clearly has a age nda to make a difference as well as music/partying etc gets canned, whilst lots of other festivals which are probably noisier and with slightly more risk of “adverse incidents” are permitted to go ahead..

but because there is a glut of festivals in Western / SW England, Wales and the Midlands it seems people just roll over and accept it as if nothings happened as its “only the yoghurt weavers what lost their event”

I live in the East now rather than SE England, our party scene went from one of the most vibrant (both legal and free) to zero tolerance and it seem very few really seems to give a fuck because they can either afford to drive hundreds of miles to another area or they have just “grown out of partying”, but it also means that less people are getting involved in wider social issues here…

what there should be is more “small green gatherings” and maybe integrated once more with electronic dance music culture as opposed to “hippies” and “urban ravers” getting split apart which is what is happening to an extent these days.

yeah… One of my previous jobs involved H&S in some detail so I am all to aware of the ways in which safety is used to push through contentious decisions..hence my yawn

I’ve heard quite a number of conflicting stories… anyway swopped my ticket for the big chill which was ace:wink:

basically H&S excuses are bollocks i reckon.

    see this:

Big Green Gathering festival cancelled after ‘political pressure’

cops reckon the BGG will provide numbers and financial support for climate camp, and CC are organising a big protest in london next month.

its very much backfired on the police though, as BGG ticket-holders are being told (unofficially) to head to the Vestas protest/picket lines instead:
