The Amazon rainforest is being destroyed at an alarming rate and is in urgent need of protection. Since January 2003, nearly 70,000 km2 has been destroyed, equivalent to an area of rainforest the size of 6 football pitches every minute.

Soya, which is mainly grown to feed animals, is a leading cause of this destruction. A report last month in Nature magazine (3) revealed that 40% of the Amazon will be lost by 2050 if current trends in agricultural expansion continue, threatening bio-diversity and massively contributing to climate change.

Recent Greenpeace investigations (1) have traced the chain of rainforest destruction directly from the heart of the Amazon, via Cargill’s facility, to KFC’s European restaurants (2), which sell bucket-loads of cheap soya-fed chicken to millions of people every day.

KFC is part of Yum! Brands, Inc., the world’s largest restaurant chain which includes Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, A&W and other fast food companies. Greenpeace recently wrote to Yum! Brands, Inc. regarding the destruction of the Amazon, but the company claimed its soya is grown in other parts of Brazil. Yet Greenpeace has traced its supply chain and found that some comes from facilities that use soya grown in the Amazon rainforest.

Greenpeace is calling on KFC and Cargill to ensure that the animal feed they buy does not contribute to the destruction of the Amazon and that none of their soya products are genetically engineered.

“Deforestation, slavery, use of toxic chemicals, land theft, illegal farming and the extinction of rare species are a recipe for disaster in the Amazon rainforest, but they are ingredients in KFC’s quest for cheap animal feed,” said Greenpeace International Forest Campaign Coordinator Gavin Edwards. “Fast food companies like KFC must take Amazon deforestation off their menu before it is too late for the world’s greatest rainforest.”

    Interesting point,

globalloon; it’s interesting that every single peer reviewed piece of research into climate change comes to the conclusion that human activity is contributing to climate change

there have been many ice ages in the planets history.

A link between (CO2), Carbon dioxide and “Global Warming”, on reflection to the change of climate, just in the UK for instance, since Victorian times, when the River Thames would freeze over each year for instance, would sugest a conection between (CO2) emissions and a warming of the climate.

jonahug; The United Kingdom, certonly burnt a lot of coal, from the start of the “industrail revolution”, what with the development of steam powerd engines.

It would seem that some of these most powerful and “high street” respected Brands, manufacture where ever it is as cheap as posible for them to do so.

which they of course will as their existence depends on delivering profit and shareholder value, and profit comes from selling what the customer wants at the price they want it.

which means we have power as consumers – either to buy and consume less, or to spend slightly more to support a local business. Its because people aren’t prepared to do this yet that we have become dependent on these cheap imports (which have driven out Britains domestic manufacturing industry).

The corporates are greedy but they are only one part of the problem, we the people are the other part.

If the cheap Chinese goods stayed on the shelves and no-one wanted them the Chinese wouldn’t send them here! Incidentally I am part Chinese myself and have a lot of knowledge of this culture, original Chinese philosophy is to try and live in harmony with nature.

Many Chinese do not really want to trash the world but they want to progress and develop their nation and people, they are merely responding to the demands of the market. Their economy is in fact growing too fast and many people there are worried, but they don’t want to slow down for fear of losing the business to other nations, and capital can fly away very quickly (this is why Britain is now in a mess).

I feel as though the “wider mesh” of Capitalisam and the “media tagging” of sociol trends and force fed ideals through mederisation, is much to blame for the lack of corparte responsibility though, like for instance multi billion pound firms, like (nike), for instance, have trainers made in China because it is cheaper for them to do soo.

    I agree with this point,

I feel that these Gloabal trends of “Booms” and “busts” seem to be charicteristic of civilisations in general.

I think that most peoples concerns for the future of the World are Human Wrights and protection of the worlds ecology/enviroment.

Historicaly, it would seem though that, both human wrights and the enviromental ecology suffer, when nations start to develop quickly, such as did the UK, America, India ect.

I feel that responsibilty and sustainability are fundermentaly important concepts for any development, philosphicaly speaking.

    It Makes me Sick,

    How Cheap Food,

    Is Always filled with

    JUNK.

    But Organic Food,

    is Always to Expensive

    For Poor People to

    Buy!

Why On Earth Though, is presumably more “expensive”, SYNTHETICLY

produced food, sold Cheaper in Super-Market’s

Than, “presumably” cheaper, ORGANIC food, that cost a lot more to buy?

it is all very well saying….

own exsistance to an extent, though I feel that such Money Laundering,

freedom restricting, Capitalist Organisations, who polute our enviroments

with their corparate waste and Polute our minds, with their corparate

Could at least take some, Corparate Responsibility and Not polute our

    Rach made a valid statment in;

natural cycle – world warms up, world freezes up, world heats up again,

This is what apears to be hapening and people have philisophisised about it for Years, hence “Giaisam”

I belive that Gia, or the “Guadian Spirit of Nature” is a verry real phenominam and through course and effect, every negertive repercusion has posertive consequencies, “like climate change”

Posertive re_actions, may consequncly, through natures self regulating, lead to negertive reactions, like for instance, the negertive effects of over crowded populations, in nature.

I feel that We as humans are part of nature and not merly using nature…

Rach we, as humans, just decide to speed up this natural cycle… however by speeding up things and not letting them run the correct course does it mean that the cycle ends and we are left with nothing?

I reckon that with birth, penoltimatly comes death and with death comes Re-birth.

The whole process of re-birth and death and re-birth again can be seen throughout the entire Galaxy, I belive.

My pherorie is that as stars mature, they use there energy up from their core, thus creating a vacum, which when the Star is used energy is greater than its energy it has got left, stars, “in_splode”, and suck up their solar systems, which are melancole, thus reversed through a void of time, Paradoxicularly. I belive that time sought of reversease itself, through the back wholes, which I belive are caused by (in-sloding) stars.

The universe itself I believe is a bit like a tree, or evan a Love Hart, in that it is always expanding through a natraul cycle of progresion and when the new meets the old, it is reborn and progresesies

I wonder if there was once life on the red surface of mars?

I feel like we are heading for another ice age here, not just because of massive peaces of Antartic ice, drifting down the occeans heat waves conveier,

But because its Bloomin freezing ere in Dover, for Jully!
