  • once again london’s violence culture claims lives 🙁 – and sadly I never even got a chance to meet someone who sounded like a person truly dedicated to free parties and creativity, who was taken from us far too quickly

Man charged with death of designer

COPS have charged a man with the murder of a web designer found dead in a burnt-out flat almost two years ago.

Brett Youngs, 30, was discovered when firefighters entered his flat in Northbrook Road, Lee, on March 5, 2003.

The cause of death was later established as resulting from head injuries.

Detectives hunting his killer have worked on the theory that the fire was started deliberately

Michael Rogers-Wilson, 30, of Littleheath Lane, Oxshott, Surrey, was charged with his murder this week and was due to appear at Greenwich Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The news has brought hope for his family and loved ones that the mystery surrounding his death, and their demand for justice, may finally be coming to an end.

Mr Youngs was a DJ and rave organ-iser in his spare time and was known on the dance party scene as Fear Teacher and Dead Silence.

Making a tearful appeal for information, his father David Youngs told the South London Press in the weeks after his death that his son had planned to start up his own record label and promotions company.

He was mourned by more than 400 people who attended a rave party at his funeral at Esher Rugby Club.

Also here (curiously, no mention of raves!)

The trial for Bretts murder has begun last week i tink it was.For all those involved be strong.Respect to you all and to his family.

thanks for the info. Been monitoring the usual local media outlets for more info but not found anything yet – then again media has to be careful of sub judice issues – and so should we – we are all citizen journalists and as accountable as anyone else in the media for what we say in public..

I hope though that if the person in the dock is guilty, they are made to give their motive for the killing.

Far too many people seem to commit murder and go to HMP without even saying why they did it.

    first report from Court…

Bizarre rant of squatter on murder charge Oct 21 2005

    South London Press

A SQUATTER who allegedly beat a housemate to death had accused another friend of being the devil, a court heard.

Michael Rogers-Wilson, 28, son of a wealthy Surrey farming family, is said to have set Brett Youngs’s body alight as he fled the scene.

Fellow squatter Ritchie Defoy told the Old Bailey how he ran from the house in Northbrook Road, Lewisham, as it filled with smoke.

Mr Defoy said he was naked and covering his body with a sleeping bag as he went past Mr Youngs’s room.

“Brett’s door was ajar,” he said.

“I pushed the door open. I was looking in. I couldn’t see anything.

“It was like a wall of smoke. I couldn’t see into Brett’s room at all.”

Another housemate called the emergency services and a firefighter later told Mr Defoy they had found a body.

“I knew when the fire brigade said they had found a body that it was Brett,” he said.

“I didn’t know he was in his room. At first I thought it was an accident. I didn’t realise that anyone had been in there.

“I was very distressed when I was told. I started crying.”

He said he had known Rogers-Wilson for three or four years and had visited his farm in Oxshott several times.

“Once Mike’s mother threw me off the land when she was drunk,” he recalled.

He said on another occasion he had gone to the farm with friend Kevin Brannon to get a generator.

Mr Defoy said: “Kevin asked Mike for the generator. He refused to give it to him and started shouting at him.

“He said you are not getting the generator and started calling him the devil.”

The court heard Mr Youngs, 30, a web designer and DJ, was trying to promote his own record label.

He was due to go to a rave in Hertfordshire on the night he died but stayed at home because he was suffering badly from eczema.

His accused killer had moved into the squat after running away from his parents’ farm.

Rogers-Wilson, of Little Heath Farm, Little Heath Lane, Oxshott, Surrey, denies murder and arson on May 27, 2003.

    The trial continues.

another one from Esher news and mail online (presumably the accuseds’ family farm is in that area).

DESIGNER ‘BEATEN TO DEATH WITH BAT’, COURT TOLD
    20/10/2005

A WEB designer was beaten to death with a baseball bat by a friend who then set fire to the house they shared, a court has heard.

Michael Rogers-Wilson, 32, appeared at the Old Bailey last week accused of the murder of flatmate Brett Youngs, 28, as well as arson.

Jurors were told that the defendant, after committing his crimes, fled the burning building, endangering the lives of his other flatmates.

Mr Youngs was a respected computer programmer and part-time DJ who lived in a squat in Northbrook Road, Lewisham, the court heard.

His brother was going out with the sister of Rogers-Wilson, who moved into the squat after running away from his parents’ farm in Surrey.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend in late May 2003, the court heard, many of the pair’s housmates had gone to a rave in Hertfordshire but the defendant stayed at home with Mr Youngs, who suffered from eczema.

Sir John Nutting, prosecuting, said: “The victim stayed in London.

“He did so in order to avoid the temptations associated with raves of drink and drugs, which he knew would be likely to exacerbate his skin condition.”

On the Bank Holiday Monday, Rogers-Wilson is said to have left to get the train back to Surrey but returned to the squat.

“The defendant returned to the property, suggesting that he had, in fact, missed his train from Waterloo and not gone to Surrey as he had apparently planned,” said Sir Nutting.

It was that night that another squatter heard Mr Youngs arguing with another man and the sound of a dog’s claws, with Mr Nutting inviting jurors to conclude that this dog belonged to the defendant.

Sir Nutting said: “The allegation is that, in the early hours of May 27, 2003, this defendant lost his temper and beat the man about the head and then subsequently set fire to the bedding under which the body lay.

“The instrument that the Crown say he probably used intending to bring about the death of Brett Youngs was a baseball bat or some similar weapon, causing serious injury from which he died before the fire started.

“Having murdered him, it is clear from the evidence that the defendant used an accelerant — probably petrol — in order to ensure that his crime was covered up and, in particular, to ensure that the body was so badly burned that what he had done would not be visible to any investigators.”

The court heard that the victim suffered a fractured skull and that a “considerable degree of force” would have been required to inflict the injuries. The charred remains of a baseball bat were later found at the flat.

“His [Rogers-Wilson’s] attempt to start the fire plainly endangered the lives of others,” said Sir Nutting.

“They were lucky to escape with their lives and only did so because one alerted the others.”

Rogers-Wilson did call the fire brigade later that morning after suffering “pangs of conscience” and turned up at his parents’ farm, before travelling to Brighton to look for accommodation.

In a mobile phone call to a friend at the squat, the court heard, he said he was woken by the fire and fled.

He was arrested at the farm later that night, refusing to answer questions when interviewed by police.

Rogers-Wilson, of Little Heath Farm, Little Heath Lane, Oxshott, denies all charges.

    The trial continues.

Dodgy, dodgy fucker. He knows he did it. So does everyone else and the old bill for that matter. He hasn’t even got the guts to come clean and deal with the conscequences, if not for himself then for Bretts nearest and dearest. If he’s pulling the “I heard voices one” let him go to Broadmoor and may he rot there, it’ll be worse than proper nick for him because he IS sane. Pathetic, snivelling coward comes to mind and no doubt his wealthy mummy and daddy believe their lovely little boy is innocent and have got a top brief. Wake up and smell the roses he’s NOT innocent and NOT insane!

Once again respect to Bretts loved ones and keep strong…

From what I’ve read about this trial and what I know about the individuals involved there seems to be several inconsistencies.

Luckily I hope in England a man is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers. What took the police so long to charge him. Was there no forensic evidence. What was the motive.

I am sick and tired of reading about people jumping on the band wagon assuming guilt with no evidence. There are two families involved in this trial not just one. I hope the jury ignore all the hearsay gossip of drugged up dead beats.

I do not see how the fact once called someone the Devil is relevant. Or that he wouldn’t lend them a generator or his mother chucked them of their land. I don’t want to speak ill of the dead but Brett was no saint.

    K

who is guilty is now for the Courts to decide – as I mentioned previously although emotions are obviously running high we must be very careful what we say on this public board about an active case because of sub-judice rules!

We can discuss the contents of the news reports (which get vetted by lawyers at the newspapers) but as there are no qualified lawyers “on-tap” for this board we must indeed be careful of adding anything else that may prejudice the case. I am only reporting what local rags say as I was born and brought up in Lewisham, and also others from HDFK asked to be kept informed of developments. I have no personal connection with anyone involved in this
    case.

A similar incident has happened in Reading where I also know both parties involved and are both from the local scene but I am not going to say a thing on here until everything has been through proper legal channels; out of respect for all parties involved (including children and relatives of both sides).

when anyone is hurt or killed in its always a tragedy for everyone involved on both families (particularly as it often results in feuds and more deaths across generations). in this case its a tragedy for the scene as a whole; every incident of this nature makes cops and authorities even more convinced that the unlicensed event or autonomous living space does not work and the nanny state must intervene for the greater good and peoples safety.

unfortunately though many who kill or fight (even those who claim they are “mad”) know exactly what they are doing, why they did it, and will do their time and/or even go to their graves feeling that what they did was right whatever the law or their “enemies” think. one way of carrying on the fight, even when the cell door slams shut is for someone to never show remorse or admit to the family why they did what they did… its the harsh reality of a world filled with hate…

I never got the chance to meet Brett so I can’t say whether is a saint or sinner – I’m sure also that many of the things I have done over the years are not exactly saintly……

it is highly unlikely though he had done anything deserving ending his life – or it would have been mentioned online by now – 2 years after this tragic event. Even those who will not talk to the authorities aren’t exactly shy about exposing others failings and judging one another on the public internet… its very depressing though to see terms like “wealthy kids with good lawyers” / “drugged up deadbeats” being bandied about amongst people who presumably know each another and may at one point have been friends – now hating one another as everyone takes sides. worse still, that it has happened amongst a community which last weekend put on one of the best events I have ever been to in 15 years…

what cannot be disputed from the available evidence now in the public domain is the fact that amongst a group of friends, an incident occured in which tensions rose to such an extent that one was killed and a fire occured which endangered other lives and destroyed a communal living space for a lot of people…

living in London is harsh – also, people on the rave scene are passionate and have strong personalities which can clash, particularly in the “post-rave sphere” of a midweek comedown.

A lot of blokes, however “PC” we may claim to be, often feel deep down that a “couple of good slaps/punches” or the use of a weapon is an instant solution to a conflict – even if it means a bit of prison time. its difficult to override cultural and genetic programming..

But what invariably happens is that everyone loses.

I don’t expect anyone to “forgive and forget” (it never happens and the bad feelings will always be there) but I do hope this case and its fallout will not overshadow or damage all the good that HFDK has done over the years – or worse still, result in arguments/fights at events or split the crew.

If it did that it would be a terrible disrespect to the memory of Brett and a disaster for the party scene.

    Please don’t let this happen!

Retrial for arson murder suspect Nov 8 2005

    South London Press

A MAN accused of murdering his flatmate then torching the body faces a retrial.

Michael Rogers-Wilson, 28, is said to have beaten Brett Youngs to death with a baseball bat after a row.

He then allegedly set fire to the body of the 30-year-old web designer and DJ, before fleeing the squat they shared in Northbrook Road, Lewisham.

Rogers-Wilson was arrested after Mr Youngs’s death on May 27, 2003, and stood trial at the Old Bailey last month for murder and arson.

But on Friday the jury of six men and six women was discharged after failing to reach verdicts following 29 hours and 39 minutes of deliberations.

Judge Peter Rook remanded Rogers-Wilson in custody and ordered he should return to court on Friday when the date of his retrial will be fixed.

Dressed in a grey suit, Rogers-Wilson blew kisses to family members as he was led back to the cells. Rogers-Wilson, of Little Heath Farm, Little Heath Lane, Oxshott, Surrey, denies murder and arson.

Just been reading all that stuff about Brett.Got me thinking about the squatscene in general and the darker side of the whole malarky.Seems to me that what starts out as something positive, progressive and, dare I say radical, inevitably starts to attract the desperate, dysfunctional and in this case dangerous types who end up becoming at the very least a burden and at the worst a force of destruction. It’s a tricky one.Nuff times I’ve lived in squats where the original crew end up becoming amateur careworkers, councillers etc. This always weakens whatever creative potential there was in the first place.I knew Brett in what I consider the heyday of the scene in London, about six or seven years ago when all the K.D.U and Hekate crews were starting up.Didn’t get to know him well but he had a genuine spirit which both humbled and inspired a fucked up k-head like myself.Every time I saw him he had flyers in his hands. Respect
