Just been reading all that stuff about Brett.Got me thinking about the squatscene in general and the darker side of the whole malarky.Seems to me that what starts out as something positive, progressive and, dare I say radical, inevitably starts to attract the desperate, dysfunctional and in this case dangerous types who end up becoming at the very least a burden and at the worst a force of destruction. It’s a tricky one.Nuff times I’ve lived in squats where the original crew end up becoming amateur careworkers, councillers etc. This always weakens whatever creative potential there was in the first place.I knew Brett in what I consider the heyday of the scene in London, about six or seven years ago when all the K.D.U and Hekate crews were starting up.Didn’t get to know him well but he had a genuine spirit which both humbled and inspired a fucked up k-head like myself.Every time I saw him he had flyers in his hands. Respect

    hi chiron! welcome to partyvibe..

I totally agree with what you are saying as I have seen it happen so many times in squats in my city – to the point where now only the desparate (usually those addicted to IV drug use and who live by burglaries) squat now (made worse by violent crack dealers who will take over a squat) and all the creative people just get jobs and rent houses (and often give up their creative stuff as work takes away their time and energy).

Another issue is that the whole process of squatting/free partying does require a certain amount of front/aggression, and a disregard for conventional laws/morals.

Even though its not of course real violence, it is the process of taking over someone elses space (even if unused) and using it for your own purposes usually against the owners will, its taking matters into your own hands.

This can create a wider “DIY justice” culture; whilst when taking a building its positive, there is always the danger in a group which is often dominated by males (many girls I know do not feel safe squatting unless as half of a couple because they are sometimes preyed upon by other squatters) that violence becomes an easy solution to conflict.

If opponents can simply be overpowered or driven away from the group there is no need for a consensus solution.

I also increasingly fear the “social anarchy” that some people claim to support is really merely a patriarchal society where the strongest man is in charge and everyone follows; but (particularly when a crisis situation occurs like a lack of resources or an external pressure such as cops/eviction etc) you often get a situation where everyone wants to lead but refuses to follow or even try to get middle ground

and thats where things go badly wrong..

    i knew brett well

fuckin grew up around that lot

still havent quite got my head round the whole situation

but im glad the cunts finaly been charged

    hope he fuckin rots

stil not heard any news about the retrial (South London Press is surprisingly quiet and they are never one to turn down a crime story).

    supposidley its in august.

Judge clears man over DJ murder

Brett Youngs was found in his flat
A man accused of murdering a disc jockey has walked free from court after two juries failed to reach a verdict.
Brett Youngs, 30, died from head injuries before his bed was set alight at his house in Lewisham, south-east London, in May 2003.

Michael Rogers-Wilson, 28, who lived in the same house in Northbrook Road, denied murder and arson.

The jury was discharged as it was unable to reach a verdict and Mr Rogers-Wilson was formally acquitted.

Mr Youngs designed websites and played music at rave parties.

His body was found when another resident smelt smoke in the early hours.

A charred baseball bat was discovered nearby, thought to have been used to batter Mr Youngs.

The Old Bailey was told Mr Rogers-Wilson left the house after smelling smoke and telephoned the fire brigade from three miles away.

He then travelled by train to his parents’ farm in Surrey the next morning.

So sadf …My thoughts are with Brett’s parents and his brother Adam who will have no justice.

So sad, Brett was a great guy. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

    RIP Brett.

Mr Rogers-Wilson has been acquitted. He is not guilty.
Mr deepest sympathies go to the Youngs family. I would be asking why the police wasted so much time and money fitting up an innocent man. I hope they are looking for the real murderer.

it would have been bad enough if he had just been done over on the streets of London by a stranger; but the worst part of this whole sorry saga is that whoever did it must have been close enough to Brett and his friends to get access into the squat without being challenged and would have presumably been thought of by the people as a friend…

only to take a life and destroy a living space and community….

IMO the culture of fighting and violence which afflicts music scenes and youth movements/alternative communties can do more damage than a thousand ASBOs and police raids..

Having spoken to those closley involved in the trial it is thought that he did in fact do it.

    But he has been aquitted.

If this was Scotland the verdict would have been Not Proven.

No one, including those closest to Brett is going to exact any kind of retribution. He’s clearly a disturbed person and he has to spend the rest of his days dealing with the demons of what he has done.

In many ways that is a far worse punishment than getting sent down.

    Miss ya Brett.

Think I may have met Brett some years ago,If it was you rest in peace mate.sincerest condolences to all his family and friends.

Jeez this happened just down the road from me.I didn’t know Brett, but it’s sad to see another organiser and a big part of the rave scene end like that…I think it’s awful.RIP

altho this sounds ideal in this situation i wouldn’t have this sort of verdict available, as someone can be accused and go through courts etc. who was genuinely innocent, but recieving a “not proven” verdict would mean he still had suspicion over his head for years and isn’t really fair

    RIP Brett Youngs :hopeless:

this thread was a while ago, have there been any new developments?

    😉
