Sussex police unlawfully impounded three sound systems (Warped, Technophobia and Kymera) in Brighton last weekend while they were setting up before for a party.
Regretably according to reports the police weren’t very concerned about how they went about the raid…
“Whilst setting up we got about 20 minutes advance warning that the Babylon were heading in our direction. We killed all the lights in the warehouse and sat in silence for that time. We could hear more cop vehicles arriving and heard them walking round the building and shining torches through windows.
10 minutes later there is a loud bang, low and behold they’ve literally torn a steel fire door from its hinges, 10 or so pigs run in with torches shouting at us to stay where we are, followed by 2 dog handlers, and some guy (riot officer?) with ‘KB’ letters on the back of what looked like a bulletproof vest, brandishing a pretty hard-core looking camcorder (we requested the tape number to get a copy but they said no- which was also caught on camera).
All 22 of us get lined up against a wall, names and addresses taken. Then we get ‘group-read’ our rights, but not arrested then told to leave the building immediately (without any personal belongings). We were told they were seizing all vehicles and equipment because we were in the process of setting up and illegal rave and that we were conspiring to sell alcohol.
After much arguing they let us in (escorted) one by one to collect jackets, keys etc. It’s now cost us £150 extra hire fee for the van and £105 release fee to get it out the police pound. There is still no mention of getting the systems back but we have been asked to attend the station today (1 person from each ‘group’) in order to “identify property and facilitate the criminal process”.Sounds like they’re trying to fuck us over… this cannot be right.”
Appeal: We’re asking for offers of legal aid and advise on behalf of the 3 systems involved. Whether you can recommend a friendly lawyer or you’ve been through a similar experience, we need to hear from you!
Am I right in saing they can just legal do this now? Or would squatters rights apply only as there’s no music as of yet?
CJA was amended in 2005 to fully cover enclosed buildings. It has even been used with success to stop legal grime events in licensed clubs and lock off whole streets when they’ve kicked off (to be fair, given that people were dashing bottles across their rivals’ heads its not surprising the Scotland Yardies decided to step in..)
I thought that was the case. Just wanted to clear it up 100% as this post is quite outdated.
The more grime events shut off the better imo … but shhh don’t tell the police I said that as they’ll ask for more power to shut of music events as a whole. >.<
They’ve already got form 696 – a while back metpol even openly released figures of how it has actually reduced the amount of violence associated with music events, particularly shootings and stabbings. I’d been counting these independently via other media sources and TBH for once the feds are telling the truth.
TBH it hasn’t even destroyed the grime scene, in fact the music has become more mainstream and commercially successful if anything, as some artists have managed to court even the liberal/arty media (there is always stuff about grime in the Grauniad for instance)
So you could even argue the Met are responsible for the popularity stuff like N-Dubz, which is probably even worse than dressing up as hippies and infiltrating eco-warrior groups..
So you recon Duppy is CID infiltraiting the grime sceen?
(not sure he’d meet the hight ristictions to join the force) :laugh_at:
Metpol was the first constabulary to abandon height restrictions in the 1970s! London got overrun with Triads from Hong Kong back them and all the Chinese cops they tried to bring over/recruit to catch then (as the “ashes to Ashes” type coppers weren’t very multicultural and certainly wouldn’t understand Chinese) were below the height requirement (you get short Chinese people in the hot bits of South China and tall Chinese people in Northern bit, but HK is in the South)
Seriously though what Dappy certainly isn’t is a “rising star from the underground”, his dad was a in a band in the 1970s and used his connections to get them their fame (same with Lilly allen and her dad being an actor/comedian)
yeah you’ve even got people like “prof. green” who alltho claims to have been stabbed (probably was for being a dick) talks too posh (even with almost convinsing rude boi acsent) to have come from the streets and is actualy a mate of duppy’s … so there’s another person “claimin’ to be fro dem streets” that’s just a mate of a mate of someone allready famous. There deffinatly no wu-tang lol
