guys – try thinking about it in the ‘whole grand scheme ‘ of things way –
it’s a fun day to promote social awareness that we are a society that consumes far too much on a daily basis and prehaps a way to propmote –
reduce, reuse and recycle as a way of life ……. :hopeless:

i agree whole-heartedly TG. wasnt aiming to put a dampener on it.
i rarely go shopping in town anyway and these days only buy obscure but useful stuff and/or stuff what I can eat.
I am usually either asleep and/or hung over for most of Saturday and rarely go shopping anyway…
I thought the sofa idea was cool but round here it would probably kick off if you put it in the wrong place!

yeah some of the responses have depressed me to fuck… people are just so sucked into the consumerist system they can’t even see that there might be something wrong with consuming 3 times more than the planet can provide
it’s a sad indication that people who attend free parties now aren’t interested in any of the ideas or social experiments that were born out of the traveller, squatter and free party movement and just see a rave as a to cane a load of crap drugs in unsanitary conditions
what can possibly be wrong with taking a day to celebrate all the things that don’t cost money, like visiting a friend or family member you haven’t seen for a while, fixing something in your house that has been broken for a while, picking up that musical instrument you’ve been meaning to learn for ages etc etc etc?
the cynicism of some people on here makes me really tired
big yourself up Tank Girl for posting this and big up the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide who will be celebrating this very positive day
what exactly did people say that was so wrong?
have done a few things for it before… one year me and a few mates dragged some sofas into town and set up a chill out space in the shopping centre… played a bit of music and a free sit down, a cup of tea and a chat
:group_hug
that was some years ago i seem to remember.

i’m sure you can read the same posts that i can. i find cynicism really quite self-oppressive

I know it all, like you said.
alright…no need for ‘i’m sure you can read the same posts that i can’
i reckon your being too easily offended here; people were just having a laugh imo
i hope i haven’t contributed to that glo. :hopeless: i just think its a bit of a ‘greenwash’ if people merely move ur consumption to another day.
i’m all in favour of consuming less, and lookin after the planet, and indeed raising awareness. I personally think we need to move alot faster on this, than we are currently doing.
it just reminded me a bit of ‘carbon offsetting’ or something… i wouldn’t wanna discourage others from making a statement, i just think it should be clearly emphasised that ‘consideration for the planet is for life, not just for buy nothing day…’.
i’m sure activists have these kind of discussions all the time… and they arn’t bein negative. :group_hug

i’m not offended, just disappointed. maybe you’re right. it’s impossible to detect subtle sarcasm via the net. i think the general response page 1 is negative whith a general theme of “what’s the point” coming out as the overall impression

the vast majority of people have never had even the first inkling that they are flushing their childrens’ future down the bog
so this is an opportunity to rock the boat and shake people into some kind of concious behaviour, but the only way it will have impact is if everyone who has some awareness of this supports any local action or if there isn’t anything happening in their area, does it for themselves
