we should put them up (I didn’t know when they were for one until a post appeared on here, as I tend to read more US based self-sufficiency / transition based blogs ) but be aware things are viewed differently in different regions
I thought East Anglia was devoid of alternative/free thinking, but it turns out its actually embedded into much the mainstream society, but down here they are very suspicious of “London based spin” even if the aims are ultimately positive…

And GL please dont link me in with the phrase preaching – it congers up all sorts of wrongness in my mind :laugh_at::laugh_at:
funnily enough the day origionates from the US
Buy Nothing Day is an informal day of protest against consumerism observed by social activists. Typically celebrated the Friday after Thanksgiving in North America and the next day internationally, in 2008 the dates will be November 28 and 29 respectively. It was founded by Vancover artist Ted Dave and subsequently promoted by the Canadian adbusters magazine.
The first Buy Nothing Day was organized in Vancover in September of 1992 “as a day for society to examine the issue of over-consumption.
:weee:
now go away and buy nothing
or else
:sign0100: :sign0071: :flowers: :horay:
I’ll tell my mate whose birthday I will be out for that I am afraid that ethically I cannot pay for any of the drinks.
sorry if i’ve pissed anyone off… i just inhabit a certain world and find it really frustrating that other people don’t take in the vast amount of information out there about our lifestyle and the impact it is having on our future
i absolutely know where u r coming from, i have spent many hours over the last 20 years following the science, and trying to inform my nearest and dearest, in the face of some cynicism… its not been an easy ride!
I applaud ur efforts, to make a difference, i think this can be done in many varied ways, and we should all do what we believe is important. i am also making an effort in the near future, as i’m down in London for the CC march, another opportunity for ‘co-ordinated action’, as u say.
of course i will burn some carbon to get there, but my judgement is that if we keep building coal-fired power stations the way we are, all the ‘bottom up’ efforts, as worthy as they are, will count for very little…
i believe the govts of the world have tried to push addressing these problems on to individuals, and failed to do the things they could have, a gross deriliction of duty. This makes me wary, because i worry that we are ‘fiddling whilst rome burns’, when we should be far more militant…
i am far from a ‘green’ saint, so u might say that this is a self-serving viewpoint, but i think appealing to individuals better nature to solve this, through altruistic behaviour, is not enough.
More info on the implications of continuing to build coal-fired power stations from James Hansen, probably the worlds foremost environmental scientist

well when i quoted the news paper i was being subtley sarcastic about peoples reaction … i think its a fucking great idea …. i just think people dont realise that at this point it doesnt really mean .. “DON’T GO AND BUY FOOD” ect. … just don’t go and waste cash on shit you dont need …
well its more marketing / spin than preaching, but perhaps preaching is the oldest form of marketing 😉
in these ends many people are already having “buy nothing day” or at least “buy less” day every weekend as they can’t afford it!
it does make sense to raise awareness at places like high schools, colleges, unis but another positive aspect in Suffolk is that junior school kids here are very right on..
one load boycotted thier own balloon release because they thought the balloons would harm marine wildlife, another school on finding there was no blue (recycling) bin at school all wrote to the fat tory council matey and he ended up personally bringing along a giant blue bin for the kids to use!
the other problem I can see in my area is that many of the people I know what would benefit from getting involved in this (and aren’t already involved in this sort of thing anyway as a fair few are…) have walked away from this site as soon as the lockdowns started getting too harsh or they started seeing “too much bad news..”
As globalloon correctly pointed out earlier in the thread, much of the rave scene is just “Tesco value hedonism” nowadays.
now we’re talking 😀

i’m glad u put it up, its an interesting contrast to the CC march… :group_hug
On the 29th i’ll probly be drivin across France (spewing out carbon!:hopeless:), and i can’t imagine i will be able to beg any fuel off the locals, as my french is pretty ropey, so i can’t participate on this one! :laugh_at:
Mayb i cud have my day on the 30th!
the french are an interestin example of course, i think about 90% of their energy comes from nuclear power…

and the sand on the beaches near the rhone estuary, all the way to barcelona, is so radioactive that if you run a Geiger counter over it, it registers as nuclear waste
many are – but many arnt
where I live a lot of people (I know) dont have money and are in debt up to their eye balls – just so they can have the plasma tv, the leather sofa, the nice car the the….
etc etc
I’m sure I’ve had this conversation with Binge on another thread –
but where I live your generally viewed as a bit weird for having these views or trying to make a difference – spread the word,
there is very little community spirit – the huge piece of land tescos brought 20 yrs ago – which has been so far stopped by the minority – is now looking to be redeveloped because of the apathy of locals and how it’ll reduce their travelling time to the nearest tescos by a whole 10 – 15 minutes
when there is a whole road of a huge variety of local and alternative shops……….
and if they dont buy something they dont need – its nothing to do with having a socal consience or ethics
and
it’s not compulsary!!
it’s an idea – you can choose to join in or ignore it…..
I’m at my sisters birthday that night (a huge huge consumer if I ever knew one – I think I just described her above) so will buy me wrongbow the day before get pissed and try not to start on any of her mates :laugh_at:
esp as they are doing a ‘body shop party’ – oh the joy!! the 29th cant come soon enough for me :you_crazy:hopeless:
you’re in London/SE England though..
it might look similar up here on first glance but its a wholly different culture
with the current generation younger people (age 14-25) they do look up a bti to the “bling” and “London lifestyle” but the age groups below them and above them (right up to OAP age) actually are transitioning
every day I see a new person on 1980s vintage bicycle what they must have taken out of storage but the they are mostly are over 25 and the bulk are about 40-60. Not the retired OAPs you usually see on bikes here, these are all new cyclists – it does posibly seem that its more a case of two car families changing and parents giving up the use of their car so their grown up children can use it (possibly because of their kids having already produced grandchildren in their teens/early 20s and thus “needing” to ferry them about in a vehicle)
