I think the answer is no but lately I’ve heard a lot of controversial uses for a lot of drugs prescribed for Fibro Myalgia, etc. Some prescribe antidepressants for FM patients, some prescribe anti-epileptic meds, etc. If you didn’t know already, I suffer from Bipolar Disorder so I have a psychiatrist that I see every few months for about 30 minutes of talk therapy and medication management. I am not an addict of any kind, I’m not out scouting for pain medication, I just liked the way it “de-stressed” me last year the night and morning of my surgery. I was prescribed Lyrica, not sure what dose but it was pretty low, for the first week of my recovery period and also to take the night before and morning of surgery. The medication made me feel so at peace, it was like pot in pill form. I was just chilled out and not in a “I’m passing out” or “zzz” sort of way…I was fully functioning, not high at all and felt my stress just release.
Does anyone know if they are doing tests to put out trials for this? Or can I be prescribed Lyrica through my psych for anxiety management? I’m not 100% familiar with prescription medications vs the law or even if some states in the US don’t allow them but for certain things…I know, that makes me sound so dumb. I apologize for my ignorance.
Hi I am new here, I live in Ireland and had to go to one of the top dogs in the mental health field in Dublin he told me that he was getting good results from using Lyrica for Anxiety and I went to my Doc he prescribed it for me but it did me no good, hope this helps.
TBH it’d be hard to get probably, but not impossible lots of stuff gets prescribed offlabel
It’s taking over for tramadol its another bunch of sweets getting handed out
Pfizer lost a patent court case (for its treatment in chronic pain) in the UK a year ago. So cheaper generics under its correct pharm name pregabalin are available and it is currently POM rather than CD so less hassle/paperwork for the healthcare workers to deal with and claims it is “safer” (I am not a healthcare professional so have no idea if that is true or not, or if it is any better than either opiates or benzos).
However ACMD is now recommending it becomes Class C controlled due to diversion, which is apparently particularly rife in NI…
I dnt think it help me with the pain just gives me a buzz wanting to do stuff but that dnt help when I’m in pain. So take tramadol that tence my muscles so I then take methocarbamol and throw in a few cyclizine to help the sickness. That’s half my meds
I think its use in pain treatment is very recent/experimental and there are mixed reviews on the stuff.
I don’t see it appear much on medication lists at work where there are many chronic pain patients – they still get either tramadol or even stronger opiates (the strength often increases with their biological age). But the greatest part of these patients are seniors 80-100+ so diversion by patients or relatives isn’t an issue when the patients cannot physically move very far or very fast and movements of people in and out of such buildings are closely monitored anyway.
Lyrica wouldn’t be prescribed by anyone for anxiety although recently I saw a story about a doctor prescribing Oxycodone for ADD… that only came out because the guy sold his Oxy to buy heroin and overdosed and died and now that M.D. is in the shit for that treatment plan.
Best advice I can give is be candid with your doctor about why Lyrica helped you and maybe they’ll go along with it.
Yes it can.
Yeah my bad it can be prescribed for that, I wonder how common it is though.

In this country it seems like it’s very VERY COMMON.

Fair enough, I know it can be abused, which is why I was wondering.
Doctors in America are tighting up on opiates because of abuse, but benzos can be abused as well and everyone still prescribes them a lot.

Brnzos are getting harder to get from a GP but pregablin/gabapentin etc seems to be dished out like smarties.
I’m sure they are, but benzo’s are still really common in America but probably not as common as they once were.
I think the different costs and patent issues also make a big difference.
Also within the UK NHS policies procedures vary slightly within the 4 separate countries that make up the UK so NI, Scotland and Wales can have slightly different than England.
I’ve seen Tramadol and Pregablin co-prescribed for some patients at work but I’m not knowledgeable enough to know exactly what this is for as these folk have a whole laundry-list of medical conditions to start with! – but this does at least show it is safe for prescription to 80-100+ age group with complex medical conditions..
