    CANNABIS POTENCY
    by Paul Dillon

In recent times stories have done the rounds of super-strength cannabis or skunk that can be up to 20 or 30 times more potent than it was a decade ago. New research released in the UK last week suggests that although there does appear to be a small rise in potency, there is little evidence that super-strength skunk is dominating the market.

Two studies analysed nearly 550 samples of so-called skunk seized by the police. Both concluded that the average content of the main psychoactive agent in skunk strains of cannabis, THC, has doubled from seven percent in 1995 to 14 percent in 2005, contradicting recent claims that most of the skunk on sale in Britain now routinely has a THC content of more than 30 percent. One of the studies showed that only four percent of the skunk that had been seized by the police had a strength level higher than 20 percent, with the strongest sample containing 24 percent THC.

Recent evidence has shown that little of the cannabis grown in the UK is “super-strength skunk”. The majority is less potent – in fact, research in the UK found that most of the cannabis on sale contained only three to four percent THC, unchanged from a decade ago.

So why do people believe that cannabis is so much stronger than it used to be? Talk to long-term cannabis users and many of them will tell you they do believe their drug of choice is much more potent than when they first started using it. As has been said, it would seem that cannabis is indeed slightly stronger. However, most experts believe there is another factor at play – the part of the plant that is smoked. One of the most significant changes in the cannabis market over the past decade is the increased availability of flowering heads or buds, i.e. the strongest part of the plant.

Years ago, the only part of the plant that was available was leaf – having comparatively low levels of THC. Now that people are more likely to smoke flowering heads, it makes sense that they experience more of an effect and believe the drug is more potent than ever before.

Remember: if you do not want any negative consequences, do not use the drug and, no matter how many times you have used a substance, never be blasé.

That makes some sense – a change in the parts smoked would definetely make a huge difference.

I was more into the fact that all this super strength skunk is being confiscated grown in labs in holland and not reahing the streets in the UK. While the super strength skunk exists it is in a tiny percentage of cases.

The bit about smoking leaf is the only real let down of the article as most people were smoking hash instead of grass back then so asking the type/strength of the grass they smoked was a bit misleading.

Anyway I’m just sick of reading about all this craply grown vietnemese skunk that kicks about being 22%thc and suchlike when only the best growers with the finest sativa strains (not very suitable to commercial growing) are going to be reaching above 20% thc and this is the first article I have found on said topic.

The people I knew in those days who smoked the untreated plant did mainly smoke the leaf rather than anything else…

Most of the folk did smoke solids of some form then right enough – its only in the last few years or so that solids have been so foul [the many and varied varieties of solids before that are gone and now its mainly just crap soapbar across the board]

Its because drug dealers like to secure their profits. Prices in drugs go down then so does the quality. The big dealers never take it in their stride.

So as hashish became more readily available in the UK the proces dropped and inevitably so did the quality and so people began to smoke the new skunk that was floating about. People would pay a lot more for this and so the profit margins were there on good quality gear and skunk was the thing and as the price began to drop all of a sudden we have all this shitty grit weed and damp poorly grown Vietbong (illegal vietnemese immigrants paying off the gang who smuggled them in by growing weed) stuff flooding the market and you either buy that shit or your screwed as there is so much of it that its the cheapest option for the dealers…..and now guess what. Theres beginning to be loads more hash coming in again.

    Big vicious circle.

Thats media hype for you though isnt it? One grower in the world breeds a super-skunk and the news vultures are immediately making headlines like

‘super skunk menace in your village and killing your kids….’:you_crazy

make sure they don’t make 10% weed 90% tobacco joints as it pretty much does IMO, i say 33-75% in a j, mainly higher sometimes pure. also inhale deep so it hurts your lungs a bit n hold it in for ages to get a real kick.

aye it was mainly weed licklle tobacco dunno wat went wrong lol

    :weee:

newspapers that claim it’s many many times more potent than it used to be have compared the most potent seizure recently to the most weak potency a long time ago

given that badly grown weed can be very weak indeed it’s not surprising people can show that its like 30 times more powerful etc

a classic case of bad science media bullshit
