  • On the news today there was a big fire in an industrial estate on London’s East End.

Loads of blokes in suits were highly agitated as a bunch of art works from “top british modern artists” had all gone up in flames and they belonged to a rich collector and a management company (who are suposed to look after all this stuff).

Whilst I’m no philistine, I looked at the list of destroyed artworks.

Stuff by sell-out “shock” artists like Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin – – overpriced tat which only gets recognition because those who made it kiss the right arses whilst far better work from other young artists (such as that shown at randomartists etc) is completely overlooked. It may sound harsh but I wasn’t particularly bothered it had burned, apart from the environmental pollution. And why the fuck keep compressed gas cylinders in the warehouses next to the rare art? People complain at free party crews because of fire safety and legit businesses do stuff like this.

Then I saw the pictures of wrecked buildings, fire engines – and started thinking….

Its s shame about those big warehouses being burned and made unuseable though………..

Just read a further update – that was a serious blaze and several small businesses on the estate run by Londoners have also been burned out. Those people I genuinely do feel sorry for….

Another issue this shpwed up is that most of theses businesses do not have insurance; London’s high crime rate (including arson and vandalism) means premiums are often too high for smaller businesses to afford them.

There are some lessons to us as well as the art collectors. Fire safety is something we should always be mindful of (just think of the potential carnage if a fire started at some london free parties 🙁 ) – and anyone who parties a city area should take all precautions to minimize damage to anything in adjacent units…

In relation to this, does anyone know where is the best place to pick up cheap extinguishers?

We always have one handy but it would be nice if we could pick up some more.

often they are retrieved from the disused warehouses; we try and get to them before the idiots either set them off everywhere or worse still use them as rams/missiles to smash other stuff. If the USED flag has not been sprung and they are not too old they should be OK

These are new ones. Not that expensive really and should come with info on how to get them recharged / use-by dates (in buildings they are checked every so often)

May be worth checking amongst crew people if their employers offer fire safety training – and volunteering for this. You often get to go to the Fire Station and put out burning stuff with extinguishers and learn about the different types

Loads of good fire safety advice is here

I’m sure theres some other stuff I did for here back in 2001 but can’t remember where it is (Dr Bunsen, any ideas?)

    Cheers GL.

Yeah I took a similar course. Can’t even remember what it was for actually. Think it might have been duke of edinburgh award or something.
