if you grew up in DE you may not have ever seen this comic strip (it would most likely have been instantly banned) but it remains popular in the UK (although the lead character has over the years stopped smoking cigarettes and fighting with his wife)
Geordie as well was he not? Seemed he used words from up here but my memory of him is very vadue. Wore a flat cap with black checkered patter didn;t he?

Click the link in the 1st post, beware though it might be a trap.
what is a “trap” ????
yep thats him; he is from Hartlepool – a town I had almost completely forgotten existed (it comes across as a Northern version of Lowestoft) until the article brought back memories of the football scores at the end of World of Sport (in the 70s/80s there were no dedicated sports channels so on Saturday the afternoon telly on the two main channels was devoted to sports).
I am not even a great football fan but vaguely remember they always seemed to be bottom of any league they got into and plagued by management troubles – I guess that recently folk there were too busy fighting their wives and chasing after underage lasses (even more so than elsewhere in the region) to win any of the football matches (the team does seem to have improved in recent times).
