  • i only succumbed to mobile phones about 3 years ago (i still don’t have a TV)

i love technology, but i also love freedom from technology

the first one i got seemed quite good after all. i found it on a beach and tried to give it back, but the owner never got back to me. £5 of credit later and i started using it. it turned out to be handy. I could do stuff like leaving directions to where to find me on an answerphone without it being traceable to my home address :groucho:

then i got a contract and with it a free phone. the advantage of this was that every year i got a new one sent to me for free that i could sell on ebay for enough to cover the cost of my contract :weee:

then i made the mistake of trying to use one of the phones i was sent… a samsung E900. :yakk:

anyone else out there who has used one of these might understand why i regretted it. something simple, like talking to someone on the phone, becomes a pain in the ass when the touch sensative ‘cancel’ button brushes against your face and cuts you off. i could go on

i started to feel a lot better yesterday when i smashed the thing to bits raaa

    then i found this

go to a carphone warehouse and till them you are technically inept with mobiles :groucho:

it worked for me – they sold me a great wee thing which is very obedient :obey: and it was a great price too :weee: never looked back raaa

seriously, it’s not me. there are thousands of reviews online telling the same story; style over substance

yes but the point was they sold me a nice simple one glo – I am not that inept with mobiles – I just tend to drop them a lot and they solved that for me too

“…The phone arrived the next day and immediately began elbowing me in the ribs. It seems to have been designed specifically to irritate anyone with a mind. It starts gently – a pinch of annoyance here, an inconvenience there – but before long the steady drip, drip, drip of minor frustrations begins to affect your quality of life, like a mouth ulcer, or a stone in your boot, or the lingering memory of love gone sour.”

:laugh_at: quality and very true haha

my girlfriend uses the samgsung in question … i get her old ones so mine are always 5 years old, suits me …

Old phones are the best though! i am still sporting a battered Motorola V3, it was bought when the first came out and it is alive now! That is a record for me and a mobile, well it died the other evening just stripped it and cleaned it out… works a treat again! :bounce_fl

anyone got recommendations for a cheap, robust and simple mobile then?

At the moment I use a (now rather battered) Sony Ericsson E600(?) which is one of the first 3G phones; but I rarely use the mobile internet at all these days or the camera so just want something that has decent voice call quality and RF (signal) performance…

mine is currently a NEC e540 amd its proof against all I have thrown at it so far

I will still recomend the Motorola V3 Razor. Nothing special actually made of metal and has taken abuse…. fell out my pocket at about 40mph and just needed a new bit of plastic by the microphone…

:laugh_at: my mum picked that samsung 1 for xmas jus cz she dint hav to put her glasses on to dial numbers !!
old fones r the best i the had fiirst moterola to cum out, propa brick, lost it in the woods found it a week later battered drippin wet n it still worked! got the w800i now wikid fone albeit a bit tempremental n it survived a nite lost up trefil ! raaa

i used a Nokia 3510i for a few years, that got dropped everywhere, never faltered. Only it is very basic, no camera or anything, but it’s simple to use.

I think it’s long been discontinued. There’s probably one for a fiver on e-bay :laugh_at:

the motorola L7i, which i got, is pretty good too. it’s like a razor but just not a flipfone, same sorta features/design though…

motorola’s are pretty good in general imo
