Most share owners (outside London city types and those who aspire to look like them because its looks more upmarket / middle class than betting on horses) do not spend ages selecting portfolios of shares looking at loads of screens and websites – they are older people our parents age who fund the investments by their pensions/savings accounts. Their fund managers select the companies and unless its one of those ethical investment products if the hedonism industry pays well (anything from booze and fags to mobile phone companies) they will buy shares in these companies if the companies are making money.

TBH I wouldn’t be surprised that they fight back against trends towards de-branded cigarettes (which is already happening in some countries) by trying to get other highs legalised, same as how a lot of oil companies have finally diversified into renewable energy. How successful this is will depend on how much power faith groups have in nations (perhaps more than folk might realise) and/or out of the more advanced social democratic nations with public healthcare, whether tolerance leads to sensible use or a binge culture.
