thats true, which is why in ancient times people also used catnip (slightly weaker) for this same purpose.
The cat’s trip only lasts for 10 mins, then they have to come back 2 hours later but most cats presumably find other things to do (like eating, sleeping etc). Never heard of a cat getting addicted to catnip (and I once worked for a govt organisation what looked after the environment and had access to some of the most bizzare and obscure nature/wildlife-related documents). Some cats aren’t even affected by it!

the diferance is cats dont have to go to work the next day … they dont have complex relataionships/ties like we do …. a cat can go get mash up on cat nip and have no consiquenses to pay .. where as we as humans have other stupid shit to deal with after …
and are still expected to feed the cats… (the german dude what owned the garden must be very tolerant as they proper trashed it :laugh_at:)
catnip for the nation
it looks fuckin wicked to me :bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl
Hahahaha, I just keep coming back to watch the spangled cats :laugh_at:
:laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at:
after doing a bit of reaserch with my mate we have decided we are going to try and extract Nepetalactone from cat nip to get the local cats onside …
thought this info might be of interest to some of you RC reasearchers that have cats :laugh_at:
here’s the extraction process … DIY Kitty Crack: ultra-potent catnip extract
Looks interesting – maybe I will do it for my cats midwinter treat 😆
Not sure about the toluene not being inherently toxic though – I wouldn stand around inhaling those fumes anyway :you_crazy
I’m a carnivore and by no means a hardcore animal rights protestor (I very begrudingly accept minimal animal testing for the benefit of human and veterinary medicine but would like to see alternatives wherever possible), and TBH the above seems like a rather unethical unregulated animal experiment which I certainly wouldn’t subject my pet or any other persons pet to.
Toluene is nasty stuff as well, why not just let the kitty have the catnip? If you had the choice of natural food/products against chemically processed crap, what would most of you take?
I see where your coming from GL … you can actualy buy the raw product Nepetalactone from sites that sell cat nip and it’s perfectly safe … as for the extraction process .. i just stubled across it when searching for “buy Nepetalactone” on google
it probably is safe (with the extract being done far better than a non-trained chemist would using toluene which is also not that easy to get), but I would think it is even rather disappointing to the cat – looking at the film they seem to enjoy the ritual of eating the plants and the social aspect as much as just the chemical.
Toluene and Xylene make me often have a coughing fit, and Benzene is banned nearly everywhere as a carcinogen so I wouldn’t want anything to do with it anyway…
the chemical can be extracted by steam distilation which means no nasty solvent has to be used…
that said some cats do not respond to catnip!
yeah the steam way was the way we was gonna go if we did it .. alltho we were just sitting about having a laugh and don’t really have any intention of doing it … alltho i was curious as to what was in catnip that made the cats like that … i was considering buying it .. but tbh couldn’t be bothered buying all that equipment to extract it … was also thinking about making tea for humans as catnip can make u relaxed ..
here’s that vid in english …
