OpenSSL fixes bug, gets dissed by German gov: That’s so random … not ? The Register
Links also lead to the full report from BSI (German cybersecurity feds – beware that it is 60+ pages of German and hard maths, although they do kindly provide an executive summary in English…)
Well stuff like this no doubt helps strengthen governemnts position that encryption is EASY, and if those unpatriotic terrists working in Silicon Valley would just try, thenwe could have perfect encrytion systems with built-in “fron doors” for law enforcement that will never ever be able to be misused by some unauthorized 3rd party.
Oh wait, it does exactly the opposite.
NL has also put €500 000 into sorting this out… This is why when I purchase online services for work they are hosted either in NL or DE.
What the BSI are doing is similar to a tech equivalent of the two policemen in the video I posted recently checking everyone was obeying the traffic laws on their bicycles – you do not need registration plates for normal push bikes and e-bikes with less than 250W power and there is less CCTV in German cities than in the UK but they still must be safe in construction (DE has extra rules about lights, mudguard etc) and they must be ridden in a safe manner.
Of course some people will try to take short cuts for their own interest; but it causes risk to others. Its easy enough to understand this on the street but not as apparent with computers….
