    On September 1, 4,000 young people will start their vocational training with Deutsche Telekom. The 4,000 trainees were chosen from around 44,500 applicants. This once again makes Deutsche Telekom the largest training company in Germany this year.

    Since privatization in 1996, a total of around 41,100 young people (as of mid-2007) have trained with Deutsche Telekom. Its range of courses allows Deutsche Telekom to make an enormous contribution to maintain Germany’s position as a center of business long term.

    The new staff will be training in seven commercial vocations, four IT tracks and, at 39 vocational training centers across Germany, as electronics technicians for building and infrastructure installations. Furthermore, Deutsche Telekom is offering nationwide the dual study option of Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications.

    OTOH I never hear of Openreach (BT engineering) or any of the large IT companies in Britain having such an intake, especially not of what appears to be 16-18 year age group without degrees.

    And then we moan there is a skill shortage and too many foreign workers having to be brought in :you_crazy

    Its not only at this level but also at the secondary level that there is a huge difference – you can go to an academic or a technical school so that the skills base is a lot wider…

    We used to do that sort of thing here in the UK. When I started with ICL, way back in nineteen seventy-mumble, it was as an A-level trainee aged 18. We were given the same programme as the 21 year old graduate intake but had 3 years of training instead of 2 – most of us had abandoned the training programme and caught the grads up before the end of year 2 though 🙂 I still think it was the best way to get started on a career anyone could have had.

    I don’t know if any companies invest that much in people now – too much short term thinking, companies wanting to start using people ASAP at low wages without bothering to train them 🙁

    to be fair I did find evidence of a similar scheme on BT’s website but it was well hidden and the starting salary was £10,000 for an apprenticeship, I thought youths these days would start on more than that?

    mind you its also been a long time since my teenage years so this may actually be nearer market rates..

    Going rate for a junior web developer in the jobs I see advertised is a frankly pathetic £15k to £17k. I could well believe they only offer 10k for a skilled technical apprenticeship. The chief advantage of the apprenticeship I can see, as opposed to general learn-as-you-go-along, might be if they contract to keep you on at a better rate after the end.

    Out of interest, what does National Minimum Wage work out at these days per year ? For a 22 year old I estimate it’s around 10k anyway and for an 18 year old I estimate 8.5k, does that sound close ?

    outside gardening and country things are sooo much more harder to get into than IT things, cos theres hardly any around, does not pay well, and ull never get any good training unless u go to college,cos ppls liviely hoods are at stake
