if you commit a violent crime, you should be kept away from society that is my veiw, not correction, punishment, people need to be held responsible for there actions, yeah sure even if a great rehabilitation scheme did work, wheres the insentive to not commit the first crime, “this cunt slept with ym girlfriend IM GONNA FUCKING STAB HIM no worrys though cause afterwards ill be taken somwhere where my future urges to stab will be taken away from me and i can go abck to my daily life without the hassel of this man”

prison does not have to mean what we call prison

yet people can still be restricted

While I think the death penalty could be reinforced to punish mass murderers, serial killers, child murderers, those sorta people… two wrongs don’t make a right.

But it could stop overcrowding in some way, and stop the Crown Prosecution Service-type-people from releasing criminals who don’t deserve “time off for good behaviour” or who get a random free Playstation or whatever in prison… its meant to be a punishment, not like detention or a holiday camp or something….

yeah but the punishment is really taking away their fundamental freedom, locked up isn’t nice playstation or not! 15 years of bein on lockdown, sounds pretty shit to me

Murder in the name of justice or retribution is still murder – the death penalty is the act of a barbaric civilisation…. Just because an individual commits acts that we as a society find abhorrent does not give us the right to behave in like manner. None of us are perfect after all, and our justice system is very far from perfect (how many cases of miscarriage of justice have there been in recent years?) Even if these cases are only 1 in 10,000, that 1 innocent person in 10,000 being killed is a price my conscience is unwilling to pay (and I believe that they would be on every one of our consciences if we as a society had the death penalty).

Yes we do have to remove those people from society in some way, and stop them from being able to repeat their crimes (a task for which jail terms are, while not perfect, at least mostly effective at doing).

    wowey

everyone deserves the chance for redemption

it sucks having to pay to maintain the lives of killers etc but its the price we pay for being a civilised nation

Thankfully we won’t bring back corporal or capital punishment, unless the BNP gets voted in – the only party who list it as a policy. So it’s all just hypothetical really.

    No.
I think that the state deciding whether a murderer lives or dies is hypocritical and unethical. I hope it never returns, life incarceration is far worse in my personal opinion.
