What are Derby and the surrounding areas like for free parties?
I’m going there for uni at the end of September doing sound, light and live event technology and really want to know what the scene is like there.
Oh and if there are a lot of warehouse parties there I can bring some lazers/strobes and shit. but I can’t imagine derby having many warehouses. But Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds aren’t that far I suppose 😀
There’s a fair few about, and it’s not too far from Sheffield which has a great scene.
derby’s got quite a good scene as has sheffield, nottingham & manchester. your coming to the right place for parties! :weee:
I think theres East Midlands crews still active; many tend to be older “hippy” types what play fluffy/deep house but they also tend to respect the land/environment more which is obviously a good thing as it holds back the backlash.
There are also legal festivals like Bearded Theory etc.
you made a good choice to go uni in this region for the course you’re doing (especially when looking for work when you graduate!) as even the legal event scene has been balkanised into the Midlands/North, as there isn’t yet as much money in “less controversial” business ventures.
in fact not a case that there “aren’t” any warehouses in the Midlands (it was once the factory floor of England) but because they missed out on the high tech boom and the media (a big user of warehouse for such things as TV studios) has been hit badly by the recession, building owners and councils are more tolerant of these buildings being legally turned into leisure venues…
