I’m aware of a number of such cases where a family is wiped out by the dad, but until recently they actually tended to be from the more affluent social economic classes, following the failure of the fathers career/business.
BTW as someone whose late father was a Cathlolic I can understand the pressure dads are put under especially if they have had a strong religious upbringing. And my Nan (but she was Lutheran) had a large family as in Malaya until the 1970s you’d be at risk of losing a few kids from health problems, being eaten by tigers, even siblings arguing to the point of murdering one another.
And even today in some areas of Britain families in some areas end up with one kid dead from overdose, another killed by a crashed car, a third stabbed after a random argument or the pressure of being a teen causes them to jump from the Orwell Bridge. (the UN was saying all this has eaten away at all the gains in child survival that public healthcare and better nutrition gained, the kids are instesd dying ir their teens).
I can’t help but feel even if he did torch his own kids house that subtle psychological pressure from the wider public would be a factor. not even that hardcore psyops stuff Pat researches bur more subtle than that, like grown up version of playground bullying. If he is guilty, yes he should sit in prison on whole life tarriff – but I think others are guilty too to push him that far and they will go unjudged and unpunished in this current climate.
