Funnily enough that’s one of the reasons why I’m against the death penalty. It promotes “revenge justice” culture which I think is unhealthy, but that is neither here nor there.
On the one hand I think you can’t really stop people from celebrating someone’s death, especially a controversial figure like Thatcher. I don’t agree with people doing it, but I also don’t begrudge them.
However it seems to me that a lot of people doing the celebrating are young folk who probably never really studied what she did ands its effects, much less lived through it. I think there is this culture of creating caricatures of politicians and simplifying them down to “bad” or “good.” In this country especially there is an extreme lack of attention to nuances, moreso than any other country I’ve lived in except maybe the States.
This is what I was thinking of. It is not really a “British” thing to do this, nor is it a “European” thing unless there is actually a real civil war (i.e with bombs and folk shooting each other) which many European countries have actually had right up to the end of the 20th Century. We have imported this sort of thinking from the USA.
Sickening and disrespectful, whatever your political views this was a person who has a family
Anyone who supports this shit deserves the same treatment, see how they like having insulting songs played nationally about their relatives when they loose them

Indeed. It really is a shame how so many feel the need for there to be “good guys and bad guys” in everything. This only gets reinforced in the media as well. In fact I noticed that post-9/11 films that depicted war were usually displaying a very pro-army message (such as in Pearl Harbour where there are scenes of people shooting down planes and then basically looking at ther camera and going “YEAH!”) compared with a film like The Thing Red Line which portrays war in a much more negative light.
What’s even worse is that the celebrations are fairly hollow. She’s not someone who died in ruin or anything, like Hitler. She lived a full life and died surrounded by friends & family. She’s also got a legacy that will last forever (but will hopefully, pretty please, stop influencing current political parties’ courses of action). By all accounts the celebrations are pretty much meaningless.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from being a Thatcherite but it’s not like she committed genocide or anything.
I disagree. If you cut back on expenditure and make people so miserable that they commit suicide, that is genocide by the back door.
10,000 people claimed as “fit for work” by AToS are now dead. Fact.

Her family were out of the country at the time of her death, so where you got that from I really don’t know.
It is very hard to be friends with a dementia sufferer. She was mad. Shame it took so long for her own party to understand that fact… but hindsight is eagle eyed.
she’s a master bitch(of the evil kind) and I am very pleased that she is no longer amongst us.
My thoughts goes to all the miners communities that suffered all kinds of misery under her rule and still does…
no tears for her, just a bucket full of piss on her grave
This is so weird… I was actually thinking the title of this post for some reason at like 7.30 am for some random reason… Maybe I just subconsciously saw it I dunno…
I disagree, no matter how bad she was and how mch she may or anyone else made you suffer, respect the dead…
Even John Lydon has said that although she was his enemy in life, she will not be his enemy in death and he will respect her..
and so he should, as he has made his money in her era and a lot of it. Also he is getting old and probably not in 100% best health himself.
BTW all them old pop stars were still propped up by middle class British Establishment and only exist because of it, not in spite of it.
In any case its far more more than he respects female news reporters in the 21st century 😉

I agree that it is unpleasant in a modern 21st century society of a rich country but this was actually a very common practice in European folk music in previous centuries and decades, especially at times of conflicts. Folk music is often “censored” especially by finger in the ear hippy types to provide a more upbeat and friendlier image than the reality (where it can even become a vehicle for extremist political views). If anything using this song from an American musical is really just a very unsubtle way of showing the hate, in nations where free speech is more controlled more subtle ways are used.
And even today funerals of prominent persons worldwide have to be security guarded and protestors with silly songs are the least of the worries, compared to angry folk wanting to finish off the rest of their opponents family.
I learned recently about how community radio stations in Africa were involved in stirring up both sides of tribes what led to warfare in Rwanda and actual genocide, and this has happened to lesser extents even in the UK when pirate radio stations discussing political matters mixed in with politically motivated music and phoneins have stirred the pot. it is actually used as a case study for training broadcasters as to the need for compliance regulation and the rôle of the Communications Ministry all the way from national governments to UN level.
Music is powerful and is used to promote war as much as peace.

Please don’t take this personally but;-
Though its the sort of track which is (incorrectly) claimed to make kids shoot up their high schools (by the same wingnuts what think learning maths is socialist) and would be kept until 22:00+ for radio airplay even where I work, its fairly tame TBH.
The angrier stuff musically (and I don’t mean quality or lack of effort wise) such as white power bands doesn’t always make it anywhere near youtube as it is banned in some countries and even if it does (and I’ve seen a few suspect things having followed links in NL and DE) I am not going to link it here or even have it in my history/profile. OK this isn’t maybe as much an issue in the UK compared to mainland Europe – in any case the UK right wing have crap music and arts tastes as they are more obsessed with money above art but I’m sure !sinner69! and others from mainland Europe realise what I mean.
That said I vaguely do remember that the BNP were trying to hijack the UK folk music movement by misinterpreting songs written for the English working classes to the annoyance of artists.
GL… check the thread title and think why it might be relevant to the subject? 🙂
the original video posted just had a picture of the band who looked like any other bunch of metal heads. Given USA culture its hard to tell whether its use for the soldiers is intentional or ironic, although I can understand why the videomaker picked that track.
