I read somewhere that in Copenhagen many roads were stopped off to motor cars, statues, public art and even small parks/gathering spaces were put in them and people were encouraged to go about on bicycle and on foot.
Is this still done today? I’ve noticed even in the riot pictures Sinner69 puts up (which is all I seem to see of Denmark!) that few cars end up in the burning barricades (but probably some unfortunate peoples bikes :hopeless:) which would hint that there isn’t much traffic there…
we actually do try this in England as well but its always “done by halves” and motorists make such a protest…
last time i was there, a couple of years ago, a lot of the city centre is pedestrianised
They working on it, the inner city is no car zone. Some streets is now put out for a test period with only busses and some hours of the day allowed for transport for shops etc. There is also a maximum size of trucks in the inner city, all due to saefty of ‘soft’ trafficants…
This is actually similar to what they do in my current town (Ipswich), but the town centre is too small and there are no proper bike lanes. It is very confusing as some streets you can ride your bike, others the street warden will tell you to get down or you can get a traffic violation ticket – and in the main bit there are too many jaywalkers so I often have to dismount anyway…
…but no pictures of burning cars is by pure covincidense….during the Ungdomshus riots there where about 70 cars burned off…and last year during other riots even more….
Cars, I tell you, they burn fast and suits good as barricade materiel…
this is true and happens worldwide (or in my town just due to disputes between people) but not the best way to make a traffic free zone – it didn’t work for us in South London in 1981…
In Suffolk every spring/summer the angry people here always set stuff alight, or if not they have driven so badly they have crashed, I often joke that “spring has arrived in Suffolk”, because I can hear the “nee naw” sound of fire engines –
it is a very distinctive “British” sound that our local Fire Brigade prefer to the American sirens although both are used.. the second vehicle is not a cop but a senior officer from the Fire Brigade. They were attending a big collision outside Ipswich…
