I found this emulator online today – as far as “original experience” is concerned it might be even better than the German ones as its got the authentic font and display too 😉
Was hoping to get an ø instead of a | but the emulator might start up with the international version of the RC700 rather than the domestic one (they also got sold to Scotland where they were used in schools instead of BBC Micros).
Will need to read up about how the display worked on these things as its different from (and smarter than) other 8 bit computers of that same era; the whole system is often set up so 3 terminals can share the same CPU – the design is from early 80s when hardware was way expensive compared to now.
Will also need to track down a decent programmers editor from the emulator site as using the bundled CP/M line editor is way too much pain and angst to deal with at my age (it was bad enough back in 1980s); especially when those lines of code just display the | or @ character and linefeed…(I entered the code directly into the DDT debugger which isn’t easy for anything longer than a few bytes)
