Yes it did happen and was well fab and groovy. I would like to add my many thanks to the people who against many odds and intimidation by the authourities dis organised it and made it not only happen but made it happen cleanly and safely….despite the holes which were fucking horrendous and dangerous,…… why each hole had to be a meter and a half deep and at least a meter square for a little sapling ….allegedly, i’ll never know ! Cheers to you all.
The residents who were against it and the residents who supported the festival will now have to live with the mess of holes until december when supposedly trees will be planted. It was sad to see the valley trashed in the way it has been.
The spirit of the Dragon was well and truly alive with about 85 per cent of the attendees being spanish and having it.
A special thanks to those setups who went ahead and did their things despite visits from their “friends” trying to dissuade them from participating. I commend your courage in standing by your principles and stood up and were counted.
Vida El Dragon.

This thread continues in Dragon Festival 2010…
Hello,
Dirty it’s Not really good excuse, last year few days after the end of the festival the site was clean, now the people start to understand they have to respect to site.
If the people don’t want hear the musik can go in hollidays.
The dragon is to celebrate the spring so …
Every village have is “village party” why not in Los Cigarronnes.
Don’t to say it s musik during 7 days, last year it was 2 nights. It was more noisy at Orgiva party.
Anyway, like every years the dragon festival is cancel so

It seems that local authorities finaly decided to act. And miracle has happened, they did not use power to stop the festival, they didn’t decide to spend silly money on police blocks and fight with festival goers. They decided to do something much better, enviromentaly friendly, positive and so rare that we all should be thankful. Yes, they decided to plant trees, actualy not only few of them they’re planning to plant 1800 trees on the land of Hidrografica and all the locals (mostly old spanish campesinos), who agreed to have a forest instead of a scrapyard. Now show me one activist, who would go and protest against tree planting. Perhaps some filthy capitalist wanting a nice industrial zone, surely that’s not the case of people living here around.
So far holes have been dug as you can see on the pictures. It looks bit spooky to see whole space of the festival dug up, but you can see that the digger did not damage any of the old trees, broom bushes or any of the original vegetation!
I appeal to everyone, have a look at the pics and do not come with sound systems, there is not any space for you to set up. Of course if anyone can come up with an alternative space (perhaps Santa Fe – thermal springs), the fesitval could go on there. But honestly Cigarrones valley is not the right place anymore.
And now a year on nearly and the authoirities have planted fuck all trees. The riverbed has all but dried up completely. Many of the existing plants and grasses are now dead due to the holes. Not to mention the wildlife, several frogponds and terrapin habitats have gone. The authorities are allegeded to have said that it would not be practical to plant and water 1800 trees. So why dig the holes? It would seem that even some of the residents who were anti dragon and pro hole are now looking to sell their land because its surroundings are spoiled, fuck you serves you right. Plenty of holes for dead donkeys
as fond as people are of conspiracy theories I think this was genuinely a flawed and overambitious attempt to “gentrify” the area, and not simply directed at Dragon Festival. It probably just fucked up due to the recession which was fairly sudden in most of Europe and they ran out of money.
I really do not think it was just to stop the festival as Spain has a perfectly good paramilitary Police service called the Guardia Civil who have real guns and can make the worst British riot police look like fluffy kittens (in common with most foreign nations).
All that said, I do think some of the folk in Spain were getting a tad tired with places like this becoming a repository for Britain and the rest of the EU’s waifs and strays and this is exactly the sort of collective stupidity what occurs when peoples hospitality is abused and there is a backlash. Now the area is presumably fucked for everyone because no one could come to a compromise. There might be a lesson to be learned here.
Bollocks the Guardia are a bunch of pussies. Especially in that area. You can chase them away with a guitar.

You have bullet / baton / CS-gas proof guitars in Spain? :laugh_at:Should have supplied some to the protestors at Copenhagen, might have saved them a few knocks and bruises.. or next time there is a rave in East Anglia we invite loads of flamenco players to see off the coppers..
I’ve seen videos of the Guardia busting up a similar festival – it could well have of course been in a different area of Spain, but just the same as in England cops’ responses can be variable, and they tend not to forgive and forget on occasions where they get outnumbered. Its also the case that authorities do sometimes tolerate a bit more dissent from foreigners who might be “ignorant of local cultures and customs” than they would natives (something which is an equally contentious matter here in England).
What was rather more ominious was even with my very limited Spanish was I could tell that not all the comments from locals were cursing the police brutality, some were completely the opposite, just as some of the trolls we had to deal with in this very thread, some of the comments we only knew about because other Spanish people tipped us off (the mods on PV try to be multicultural/internationalists but we don’t know every EU language!)
whoever is involved if they have really gone to the trouble of digging all those holes for whatever reason its clear that the w(hole) community is greatly pissed off with the divisions this festival have caused.
my other points still stand – in England when our society wants to stop a rave they just use normal cops (sometimes with riot shields, very rarely with guns), rather than digging 2500 holes in the countryside! for things to have got so extreme there is clearly a backlash developing in that area which could be very bad for the immigrant communities just the same as things are getting worse for foreigners anywhere as the economy and society deteriorates. The same is repeated all over the EU. This is a much bleaker scenario that guitars and festivals might not be able to solve.
I’m not sure about your own nationality but you are either really good at English for a Spanish person, or you are an immigrant to Spain from the UK. Either way, perhaps if this thread develops and people start writing in Spanish again you can help us translate? I’d like to think you paid back the hospitality the Spanish have shown you by at least trying to learn their language 😉
