This year sees the tenth annual Dragon Festival in Cigarrones, near Orgiva. Possibly Europe’s largest and longest running free festival, the Fiesta del Dragon takes place on the 17th to 19th of March to celebrate the arrival of the Spring Equinox. Thousands of people will gather to enjoy three days and nights of anarchic and vibrant contemporary culture.
In 2005, after 3 years of prohibition the mayor of Orgiva finally realised that he could no longer stop the Fiesta del Dragon. To do so would be in contravention of the Spanish Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. Suddenly organisation did not mean arrests ! This allowed the people of Cigarrones and the surrounding Alpujarra to put a festival together that reflected the diverse aspects of life and celebration here.
