Prof. Nutt – Top bloke and the government sacked him for speaking truth based on scientific research, how fucked up is that?

Should have got a lot more media attention, Government commissioned him to do the report, then sacked him for publishing facts instead of the party line…….. a shocking precedent which may lead to other scientists staying quiet or lying to keep their jobs

true, but it would have been far better for British society to have caught up with the rest of North Europe during the better economic times, when there was more optimism and goodwill in our society. Also folk would need to be more like North Europe with regard to self discipline.

For example, Professor Nutt argues quite correctly and from a position of knowledge that the risk of mental health problems from cannabis use is less than its made out to be, and that the problems which do present are at the lower end of the scale. He does not claim the drug is completely harmless, and from this common sense suggests that the moment a user starts getting bad effects from it (even if they are just minor things like forgetfulness and lack of motivation) they should use it less or discontinue it. Similarly with MDMA, amfetamine or any party drug, the risks are less than even alcohol but they do exist.

But too many people ignore the second bit, and keep using to the point they end up doing something completely out of character perhaps to the point of breaking other criminal laws (than just doing drugs) and end up in trouble, and then wonder why they are judged as being “mad”…

Can’t argue with any of that mate. If people have adverse affects from a drug and still continue to do it, then they spoil it for the rest of us, as we all get judged by the behaviour of the few.

I think one of the difficulties is he got ‘too much’ (negative) media attention

Its all discussed in the book (and no I’m not on a percentage of the royalities :P), bt mainly daily mail / sun types blowing what his teams evidence showed, and tried to make out he is a ‘pro druggie’ when as someone here, I think GL has pointed out – he is a psycho / neuroscientist interested in facts, evidence and harm reduction, and in comparing the ‘harms caused by taking ecstasy to horse riding’ was taken totally out of context, and stupid mail readers jumped on the band wagon

I think this is the correct link to the paper

    EQUASY

(not sure if they come in PDF gaz – but I’m sure if you google you’ll find some)

Your right sorry, I should have said more media attention for the right reasons, ie his fact based research and unfair dismissal, not the press linching he got

I had forgotten about the ‘E’s safer than horse riding’ quote…. it may have been taken out of context, but truth is I took pills for many years and never worried about it or saw anyone get hurt on them…….. but when I used to take my little sister horse riding it scared the shit out of me………. she never got hurt horse riding but I did see one of her friends have a very close call when thrown at a jump, was only her body protector that saved the girl from serious injury

I actually started a thread where I linked every news report in my area about pill overdoses, and similarly all those of hospital admissions caused by riding accidents. Drug use is high in the rural areas as is equestrianism – but there were far more riding accidents than OD’s…
