It’s mae fram the wood of the sassadrass tree. At least saffrole, the essential oil distilled from the tree is the main precurson to the MDxx compunds.
Tree is getting rarer and rarer, if it was legal people could cultivate the tree.
Yeah, seizing 50 tonnes of saffrole will have caused substantial damage to remaining trees.
not sure if there is any national or global prohibition on planting the tree as such but they only grow in some parts of the world which are already suffering from habitat damage / destruction; and the feds/govt worldwide are smart enough to socially engineer situations where less controversial / risky alternatives to saffrole may exist for its various legal/tolerated uses – although sustainable ways of harvesting it from other plants do exist.
If there is indeed a shortage across Europe I suspect that sadly at least some precursors of even finishedd product may well have ended up at the bottom of the South China Sea or scattered across various fields in fomer USSR along with the wreckage of two passenger aircraft – what remains possibly diverted to USA (and maybe even back to Asia where the precursors came from) and then mixed in with all sorts else due to the boom in EDM events. Think about where the stuff is often made; and how SE Asia has in the last decade reversed a lot of its hardline drugs enforcement.
Another (perhaps greater) factor may simply be that a lot of people posting on here saying they “cannot get it” in EU countries are over the age of 25.
in recent years there has been a shit ton more social engineering to keep MDMA and party drug use in the EU within age 16-25 age group and middle class youngsters who are attending some form of further/higher education; and to put slightly more pressure on anyone outside this age group (via child/family protection and adult safeguarding) who is stlll using recreational drugs after this age. This happens not just in English speaking countries but EU-wide and is backed by powerful supporters such as faith groups, big tech companies and the less irrational USA campaigners (who are also seeing the fallout in their country from the sudden influx of EDM events like what happened in 1990s Europe).
Hard drugs addicts are of course more difficult to treat and more obvious in their presence (due to begging, involvement in petty crime etc) hence why it seems they are more prominent.
I just turned 26 and I’d have to think I’m a bit older than the average for the scene that is large scale EDM events in America that revolves around ‘molly’ although (I’m more or less have no desire to roll anymore anyways) but I do see some wannabe’s who are 25-30 at shows from time to time who’d probably be trying to roll at EDC or any other big electronic festival in America although the scene is almost a living organism that does manage to self regulate itself and keep out anyone who doesn’t look the part.
I think it is less available in pure form than it once was and what is out there is more adulterated/misrepresented on average than 5-10 years ago as more mimics have become prevalent but yeah if some 30 year old is coming on here banging on about “I can’t get molly anymore” then consider the source of that information. Take into the precarious nature of the sassafrass tree and precursors and you get a more tempered view on the widespread availability or unavailability of good E.
Bear in mind that drug supply and demand are incredibly stochastic and the logical outcome of the popularization of ‘molly’ in America is more ‘molly’ on the market which then effects the more mature MDMA/MDA scene in Europe in ways that we don’t really know and I’m hesitant to speculate on. From an American perspective I’d venture that what is out there isn’t as good as what was once out there in terms of average purity or legitimacy but this isn’t necessarily due to safrole oil being in shorter supply than it once was but rather is a combination outcome of: a. n00bs coming onto the scene who never have had good MDMA and thus couldn’t subjectively tell you what they’re taking b. a lack of onsite testing that allows for misrepresentation c. rise to prominence of stuff like methylone ect d. molly is now chic
Its weird to contrast the careful social engineering of the scene in europe with its explosion in America
As an aside I think people just misrepresent drugs more than they should: a show last week someone offered me some K, generally I’d have thought about it, but about a year ago one of the band I was seeing had a show CANCELLED midset because a half dozen kids needed to be taken to the hospital for MXE… haha fuck that shit, K>>>MXE esp if someone is trying to sell you some MXE as K.. bullshit, I mean the guy could have had K but considering the facts it was a good idea to steer clear.
all the same things that are happening with the EDM scene in the USA occured in Europe and Asia during the late 90s to mid 2000s. The real reason the promoters are flocking from Europe to the USA is that the USA is geographically large, yet lacks a “European style” public sector in some regions so what local govt exists will hire out any large venue to anybody without asking too many questions about crowd safety, logistics etc at least until some bad incident happens.
It appears to be a backlash against binge use in Europe and rising domestic use in Asia that led to the purge against saffrole production in Asia during the mid-late 2000s and subsequently the rise in popularity of cathinones / NPS (as these are far easier to make using leftover chemicals from other industrial processes such as making paint, electronic components and other items not directly associated with hard drugs).
Of course that was a flawed way of dealing with the situation but having mixed European / Asian ancestry I can see why tolerance/decrim/legalisation wasn’t initially viewed as a valid option.
It is literally only in the last few years views are slowly changing and that appears to only have been fuelled by the tech boom making richer Asian nations like Malaysia and Singapore less worried about drugs culture being used as a distraction technique by a foreign invader (to the point they have quietly reduced or stopped use of the death penalty!).
Interestingly (and unfortunately) Indonesias people voted via a democratic referendum for the death penalty to return following a rise in drug related deaths and drugs tourism during the spell of tolerance; something that has not been repeated in MY and SG following their changes to enforcement a decade ago.
its not related to any state/popular religion as MY has just as many Muslims but retains its tolerance; and ID actually has a lower voting age than many European nations and is no less democratic than its former coloniser NL…
it might simply be that Indonesia is geographically larger; folk there more dependent on motor transport, what EDM events did happen may not have been held in the safest venues / areas as well as it getting the less profitable / more environmentally risky jobs from the tech boom (ironically many involving processing chemicals!) so they perceive the threat from drugs culture to remain stronger.
Closer to home Germany has far stronger laws against NPS and drugs culture as a whole in comparison to its neighbours and near neighbours (NL, DK, BE, FR , UK etc) as well as regulation of music events (dancing on Sundays remains forbidden in many regions; with Christians of all denominations plus the multi faith focus groups supporting this law!) – FR also has varying tolerance of EDM events; and both these countries have shifted their national focus onto coping with the global refugee crisis, possibly at the expense of tolerance of domestic hedonism on “cost grounds”.
I don’t think this is intentional but “austerity friendly” governments are unable or unwilling to provide the resources to cope with both at the same time.
Our scene is 10+ years behind the one in Europe but lots of people act like fools and bring bad publicity to it here in the states ruining it for the next guy..
