not true, the law was introduced locally by conservative politicians in some regions of NL (the social democratic mayor in Amsterdam never agreed with the rule and has decided not to enforce it as local govt in NL has more autonomy) the reason given was because of the EU but not because Brussels told them to do so, quite the opposite, NL folk were pissed off over all the drugs tourists since internal borders in Europe disappeared.
The EU actually kicked up a fuss about the wietpas required in some regions and NL had to fight in court to try and introduce a legislation that would discriminate between NL citizens and those of other lands.
Amsterdam has always been dependent on tourism…
Even in 1980 they were singing about how everything was allowed in Amsterdam 🙂
