he was pulled up for importing the animal remains without the proper licenses, not for making art out of dead creatures (in some bits of the USA taxidermists make a creature called a jackalope which is a jackrabbit crossed with a small antelope, but these are both classed as pest species in those regions)
this incident was from 2011 – in the end he got 20 months in federal prison; which even in the USA isn’t going to happen to people for minor crimes (looks like he was dealing with some very dodgy types in foreign lands) and TBH is harsher than I had expected his punishment to be; although the feds also found evidence that some animals were being killed for these projects. it appears they must have been working with their counterparts in various Environment Ministries in other countries and been gathering evidence on him for quite a while.
