    END ISRAEL’S BARBARITY

    EMERGENCY DEMONSTRATION
HANDS OFF GAZA: STOP THE BOMBING: FREE PALESTINE
SATURDAY 3 JANUARY: ASSEMBLE 2.0 PM
CENTRAL LONDON (LOCATION TO FOLLOW VERY SHORTLY)

Israel has launched a terror bombing against the people of
Gaza, with over 300 hundred dead and many hundreds more
injured. Not content after three days of devastating
slaughter, the Israeli government promises more barbarity to
come. The head of the Israeli military says, “This is only
the beginning”. The people of Gaza are asking, if this is
only the beginning, what will the end look like? (See
Cutting the wire: Gaza today: ‘This is only the beginning’)

An eye witness describes what happens when the world’s
fourth most heavily armed nation rains down such devastation
on the civilians of the world’s most densely populated area:

“People are going through the dead terrified of recognizing
a family member among them. The streets are strewn with
their bodies, their arms, legs, feet, some with shoes and
some without… Hospitals and morgues cannot cope and some of
the dead are still lying in the streets with their families
gathered around them, kissing their faces, holding on to
them. Outside the destroyed buildings old men are kneeling
on the floor weeping. Their slim hopes of finding their sons
still alive vanished after taking one look at what had
become of their office buildings.” (See
ei: “The amount of death and destruction is inconceivable”)

Protests against these atrocities have already taken place
across the world with two big demonstrations in London,
called at the shortest notice, blocking the roads to the
    Israeli Embassy.

Now a national emergency demonstration in London has been
organised for Saturday 3 January. Called by Palestine
Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition, British Muslim
Initiative and many more organisations, the demonstration
will assemble in central London at 2.0 pm (location to
    follow very shortly).

We need to mobilise in the largest possible numbers for the
emergency demonstration. Gordon Brown needs to be reminded
that Tony Blair’s support for Israel’s attack on Lebanon in
2006 lead to him being forced from office. The British
government must call for the bombing to stop now and for an
end to Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza over the past year,
which has inflicted near starvation and lack of essential
    resources on its people.

Please do all you can to mobilise for the emergency
    demonstration:
    * Spread the word as widely as you can among your friends,
    neighbours, work colleagues, fellow students.
    * Download the demonstration flyer from the Stop the War
website, photocopy or print it, distribute it as widely as
you can (available shortly Stop the War Coalition Online)
    * Take leaflets to your local community centre, mosque,
church, etc. Help leaflet tube and bus stations.

Stop the War is asking all of its local groups around the
country to mobilise support for the demonstration as widely
    as possible.

    EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR FUNDS

Helping to organise national demonstrations is very costly.
Stop the War urgently needs funds for Saturday’s
demonstration and for the other activities we have planned
for the coming months. Israel’s onslaught on Lebanon, the
continuing catastrophe of Afghanistan and Iraq, the threats
to extend war into Pakistan, the instability in the
Caucasus, Somalia and elsewhere show that the need for a
strong and active anti-war movement is as necessary as ever.

its v sad that Israelies, who were victims of the most notorious genocide of the 20th century, seem relatively happy to victimise the Palestinians… :hopeless:

Do you think they are getting stuck in because of the political vacuum in the US? I just don’t see why they are doing it now…

From what I’ve read, based about Obama’s cabinet choices there’s nothing to suggest he’ll be changing course on Israel & Palestine unfortunately…

yeah, i think its (at least partly) hilary’s gig… :hopeless:

he did great with his environmental/energy appointments, as well, so its very sad he didnt do better.

Bunsen, have a look at Avaaz.com (I think) if you’re interested in this kind of stuff. They basically send you emails every so often asking you to sign a petition or donate to their campaigns which span a number of global issues, the Israel-Palestine crisis being one of them.

I agree mate, If someone kept firing missiles at us and wouldn’t stop then you would try and stop them, any means necessary. It is a fucked up situation but what else can israel do? Talking hasn’t worked so military use is all thats left. Hamas are the ones that have fucked it for Palestine. Thats my just opinion tho.

    1) IF BRITAIN WAS GAZA… 16,000 DEAD

In the last four days, Israel has killed close to 400
Palestinians in Gaza, which has a population of one and a
half million. A proportionately similar death toll in
Britain, with a population of 60 million, would be 16,000
dead in four days. If Britain was Gaza, Israel would be
condemned by the whole world for monstrous crimes against
humanity and forced to stop the carnage. The mealy mouthed
statements by governments so far are pitiful. Israel is only
able to act in this barbaric manner because of the support
it gets from governments who habitually turn a blind eye to
its war crimes. We must create a tidal wave of opinion
demanding an immediate end to the Israeli massacre.

This is why the demonstrations in Britain and around the
world this Saturday are so important. A national emergency
demonstration has been called for Saturday 3 September by
Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War, British Muslim
Initiative, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and many other
organisations, assembling at 12.30pm at Embankment WC2.

    ***************************************
    2) WHAT YOU CAN DO

Time is short but, as we showed in the two emergency
demonstrations organised to oppose Israel’s attack of
Lebanon in 2006, tens of thousands will support a protest
against such mass slaughter and devastation, if it is
publicised widely and quickly. Please help in any way you
    can, e.g.:

    * Encourage your family, friends, neighbours, work
colleagues, fellow students etc to join the national
    demonstration;
    * Download the demonstration leaflet from the Stop the War
    Website (http://tinyurl.com/97udra) for printing or
photocopying. Distribute it as widely as you can in your
    community;
    * Visit community and church groups, mosques etc and
    encourage support for the demonstration;
    * Organise with friends to leaflet tube stations, bus
    stations, shopping centres etc.

    ***************************************
    3) LOCAL PROTESTS AROUND THE COUNTRY

Everyone who can should join the national demonstration in
London. For those who cannot, there are local protests in
Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds,
    Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Norwich,
Portsmouth, Preston, Southampton, Swansea and Tunbridge
Wells. Details are on the Stop the War website and we will
post details for other local demonstrations as we receive
    them.

FOR FULL DETAILS OF LOCAL DEMONSTRATIONS, SEE:
    Stop the War Coalition Online

    ***************************************
    4) STATEMENT FROM TONY BENN
Tony Benn, President of Stop the War Coalition, writes:

The Israeli Government, armed and supported by President
Bush, with its savage attack on the people of Gaza now
represents the greatest threat to security in the Middle
East and the world peace movement is mobilizing on a massive
scale to defeat this aggression. I appeal to everyone who
can possibly do so to attend the many demonstrations that
are being held here so that the British government is left
in no doubt as to the strength of opposition there is to
    this war.

    ***************************************
    5) TEN REASONS TO SUPPORT THE DEMONSTRATION

    * 1. Close to 400 people have already been killed and Israel
is committed to continuing the mass murder. With Israeli
elections due in two months, all Israeli leaders are
competing over who is the toughest and who is ready to kill
    more in Gaza.
    * 2. Most of those killed have been civilians. The figure of
60 civilians which has been given out is nonsense, based on
the exclusion of all male victims from the dead.
    * 3. Over 1000 people have been injured, many of them
seriously, with loss of limbs, eyes etc.
    * 4. Despite letting in a little aid one day this week,
Israel is maintaining the most severe blockade seen anywhere
in the world for over 50 years, which starves Gaza of food,
medical supplies, water, fuel and other essential resources.
    * 5. UN commissioner-general, Karen AbuZayd, says the
situation in the region is desperate: “There’s no fuel,
there’s no power plant, there’s no electricity working now.”
    * 6. Medical services in Gaza, already depleted by the
Israeli siege over the last year, are close to collapse,
with doctors and nurses only able to deal with the most
serious cases, many injured left to die in hospital
corridors, the morgues full and ambulances not working for
lack of fuel and spare parts.
    * 7. The UN, on which under the Israeli siege most people in
Gaza depend for food, has stopped distributing food because
its agencies have run out of fuel for vehicles. Nine out of
ten Gazans live below the poverty line, with many families
forced to eat grass to survive.
    * 8. The infrastructure in many areas has been so destroyed
that residents have no access to water or electricity. The
UN says the Israeli blockade has resulted in Palestinians
receiving running water only once every five to seven days
    * 9. Israel is in breach of many Geneva Conventions and
international laws amounting to war crimes, including,
wilful killing, extensive destruction of property not
justified by military necessity and collective punishment.
    * 10. The condemnation of Israel’s actions must become so
overwhelming that it is forced to stop its policy of mass
murder and collective punishment against a defenceless
    people.

    2) SHOES OF OUTRAGE FOR GAZA

With the death toll in Gaza now over 400, with 2000 more
injured, and with the United Nations saying the population
are on the brink of humanitarian catastrophe, Gordon Brown
has cloaked himself in Tony Blair’s mantle. Brown says he
supports the call for a ceasefire but, just as Blair did in
the Lebanon war in 2006, Brown has slavishly tied himself to
George Bush in blocking a move by the United Nations to call
on Israel to stop bombing Gaza immediately.

In the spirit of Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi, who
used his shoes to protest over George Bush’s war crimes, and
to register our disgust at Brown’s hypocrisy, we are asking
protestors at London’s demonstration on Saturday 3 January
to bring old shoes to leave for Brown when the march passes
    Downing Street.

    ***************************************
    3) MASS PROTEST OUTSIDE ISRAELI EMBASSY

    5) LOCAL PROTESTS AROUND THE COUNTRY

For people unable to attend the London national

protests, which we are publicising as soon as we receive
details. The current list is Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol,
Cardiff, Caernarfon, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Hull,
    Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham,
    Norwich, Portsmouth, Preston, Sheffield, Southampton,
Swansea, Tunbridge Wells, Walsall and York.
FOR FULL DETAILS OF LOCAL DEMONSTRATIONS, SEE:
    Stop the War Coalition Online

    ***************************************
    6) NO HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN GAZA

    * TZIPI LIVNI, Israel’s foreign minister:
“There is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza and therefore there
is no need for a humanitarian truce.”

    * RICHARD FALK, United Nations Human Rights Council:
The Israeli airstrikes, and the catastrophic human toll that
they caused, challenge those countries that have been and
remain complicit, either directly or indirectly, in Israel’s
violations of international law. That complicity includes
those countries knowingly providing the military equipment
including warplanes and missiles used in these illegal
attacks, as well as those countries who have supported and
participated in the siege of Gaza that itself has caused a
    humanitarian catastrophe.

I remind all member states of the United Nations that the UN
continues to be bound to an independent obligation to
protect any civilian population facing massive violations of
international humanitarian law – regardless of what country
may be responsible for those violations. I call on all
Member States, as well as officials and every relevant organ
of the United Nations system, to move on an emergency basis
not only to condemn Israel’s serious violations, but to
develop new approaches to providing real protection for the
Palestinian people. (SEE ZNet – Israeli War Crimes Statement)

Both sides are in the wrong on a moral scale but militarily it’s Hamas that have provoked this. Israel is demanding Hamas stop firing missiles into Israel. Hamas ain’t listening and carry on firing em. Israel launches air strikes and now a possible ground invasion. This hasn’t happened just on the whim of a few. Israel has been preparing this for the last 6 months. Hamas have only themselves to blame for this imo.

Poke a lion with a stick and it’s gonna fuck you up eventually.

    Its just not cricket.

Stupid situation & one I dont want to have an opinion on.

Most people jump on the band wagon without a forethought because Palistine seem to be winning the media war. Seen the same thing happen in the Balkans crisis & Northern Ireland the side that shouts loudest and often enough wins.
