Does anyone have any scientific knowledge of the effectiveness of benzos after expiration? My new doc won’t give me any until I’m stable on another medication, however I have an old prescription that I would like to use. The problem is that it expired 7 years ago. Yeah, I know, dumb idea, blah, blah, blah. I just want a straight answer from someone who knows what they’re talking about.
I have 15 mg serax (oxazepam) capsules that expired in 2007. I need something and don’t necessarily care when it expired. What I care about is how well it will work. Will it be stronger, weaker, toxic, pointless? I can decide whether or not to take it once I have the info to make an informed decision. If I can’t get the info, I’ll just go by how badly I want/need it and then see what happens.
I’m not a pharmacist or chemist so can’t say for sure. My guess though is that they won’t do you any harm, assuming they’re still in the original, sealed blister pack?
I don’t think the expiry date is a time by which you should consume them for them to be safe. If anything the ingredients may have just started to deteriorate a bit so they may seem weaker/not be as effective as expected. I’ve known someone to eat Valium that was about 3 years ‘out of date’, they didn’t have any complaints about it.
It is in my house but that isn’t a sound medical opinion.
These weren’t in a blister pack. Just the capsules dispensed from a larger bottle. I’ve heard of a study done by the military to see how long medications are still usable after a printed expiration date. What I read didn’t go into specifics, but it said their findings indicated no significant changes in most meds for 10, 15 and even 20 years after expiration. However, my very vague source also noted that some types of meds become toxic. They didn’t happen to list anything specific, though.
So, in general, do tranquilizers maintain their potency, or do they become too strong for safe use?
I dunno anything about the shelf life of something they prescribe in bottles but I’ve read many times LSD and most other drugs, if not all can last for fucking decades with no real care needed to look after them. they just sit there powdery and pilly until they’re gone. What is considered “medical grade” and for how long I dunno but as long as they are kept in something and not, I dunno. How do you mistreat pills n powders so they somehow decay or evolve into killing machine?
Benzos won’t go toxic if thats what you’re asking
Thank you! Would you happen to know how much the potency is affected? I know to start small, but an idea of what to expect would be nice. I’ll report back when i know more.
The amount that could possibly be expected at these time scales is miniscule. So small as to be insignificant but I’ll guarantee you one thing, they won’t have gotten stronger lol.
