  • A court in Pakistan has ordered the authorities temporarily to block the Facebook social networking site.

The order came when a petition was filed after the site held a competition featuring caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

The petition, filed by a lawyers’ group called the Islamic Lawyers’ Movement, said the contest was “blasphemous”.

A message on the competition’s information page said it was not “trying to slander the average Muslim”.

We simply want to show the extremists that threaten to harm people because of their Muhammad depictions that we’re not afraid of them,” the statement said.

“They can’t take away our right to freedom of speech by trying to scare us into silence.”

Correspondents say that publications of similar cartoons in Danish newspapers in 2005 sparked angry protests in Muslim countries – five people were killed in Pakistan.

Internet is free in Pakistan but the government monitors content by routing all traffic through a central exchange.

Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court ordered the department of communications to block the website until 31 May, and to submit a written reply to the petition by that date.

An official told the court that parts of the website that were holding the competition had been blocked, reports the BBC Urdu service’s Abdul Haq in Lahore.

But the petitioner said a partial blockade of a website was not possible and that the entire link had to be blocked.
The lawyers’ group says Pakistan is an Islamic country and its laws do not allow activities that are “un-Islamic” or “blasphemous”.

The judge also directed Pakistan’s foreign ministry to raise the issue at international level.

In the past, Pakistan has often blocked access to pornographic sites and sites with anti-Islamic content.

It has deemed such material as offensive to the political and security establishment of the country, says the BBC’s M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad.

In 2007, the government banned the YouTube site, allegedly to block material offensive to the government of Pervez Musharraf.

The action led to widespread disruption of access to the site for several hours. The ban was later lifted.

glad to see people are standing up to the more radical views…

you dont think its an interesting point about the right to cause offence, freedom of speech and personal liberty?

(I think the concept is but the reality on facebook is just a load of idiots spouting ignorant anti-Muslim hate)

thats what i mean this was done with the intention of causing offence, which no-one has the right to imo. No religion on the planet has been set up to cause offence to anyone. If people get offended by some of the practises of certain religions that still doesnt give them the right to cause offence back (eye for an eye etc).

i belive in freedom of speech, but some people take it too far and just use it as an excuse to be able to get away with saying what ever they want. like these two…

Ah fair play man. I guess I believe its important to allow people to cause offence, although I think that’s very different from inciting hate and other such things. I guess it comes down to appropriate ways of expressing it to. Like, if someone posted pics of Mohamed on a Muslim website etc that would be morally wrong. But if they set up their own website and post pics that would be fine.

Like the south park episode, no problem with a warning that it might cause offence on the front of the program, but I do have a problem with people saying it shouldn’t be shown because it causes offence.

sorry my brain is spinning round about all sorts of crap today!

ps from what little I have herd of those two I believe the technical term for them is ‘twats’

I dunno who captain hook is but i don’t have a problem with GW

Geert Wilders is also against the Netherlands drugs tolerance (gedoogbeleid) and also wants to make squatting a criminal offence!

The real beef with “Muslims” across the North Sea has fuck all to do with Islam anyway. Compared to Britain or Spain none of the Benelux countries have suffered any serious problems with Islamic terrorism, and there have been Muslims and mosques in these nations for decades if not entire centuries. What people are angry about particularly in NL is immigration from North Africa and similar nations (which just happen to have a majority Muslim population) and people from these countries muscling in on the drugs/sex trade. it was fine when the economy was good but now the economic depression is here people are getting less tolerant.

I bet if a popular movement in Pakistan used FB or any of the US-based corporate social networks and then their govt said “hand over personal details or we’ll permnanently block your site” (thus denying exposure to the ads on it) they’d quietly hand over everything to the feds.

Of course they might not do it quite as openly as in Britain, it would “leak out” and be blamed on “hackers..”

yeah people taking the piss like south park is fine, im not sure what the difference is or why i think thats fine and the FB thing isnt, maybe cause southpark is funny and probably not done to cause real offence. where as i think the FB group was.

seems a bit hypocritical to like one and not the other i know… i know there is a difference, but i cant find the words to explain it at the minute. also did they actually show a pic of that cleric in southpark or did they just have an episode sort of taking the piss that they might?

your attention span cant be that bad if you’ve manages to read 3 books mate. its probably tv that reduces peoples attention span tbh.

maybe you just dont find it interesting? which is why it cant hold your attention for very long? i found the same after i came back from travelling, unfortunatly im getting back in the habit of watching the shitbox again.. :-/

I just find its all kinda over simplified, a bit basic and dull. Even the documentary’s endlessly repeat quite basic things and dont explore to the depth I would like/radio 4 does. But then I only have freeview so I cant get that much of the good stuff. And a lot of the time the visual stuff just doesn’t seem to add anything to the information. Especially science stuff, on horizon we now have scientists interviewed in oddly lit warehouses while fancy computer models and arty burly images are endlessly displayed over the top.

Reading just seems to hold my attention much more and goes into so much more detail. Its probably just that I am used to being stoned when I watch TV but never smoke when reading so I am just not used to the TV soba.

Sure things will settle down and I will stop moaning lol
