thankfully their days are numbered, the most developed countries are showing definite decline in religion (including america, despite the bible belt growth)
fingers crossed the less developed countries will follow the same path, let us not forget the UK and USA were (almost) once as strict as hardline muslim countries are now
A countries “development” and “freedom” still ultimately depends on access to relatively cheap/abundant energy sources and people having free time to think for themselves (not being bogged down by long hours of manual labour..) and feeling secure and happy in the their lives. there are certain harsh realities such as resource shortages and a long term economic depression. when times are hard, many people turn to faith groups..
even if Europe switched tomorrow to completely renewable energy and sustainable transport (extremely unlikely) unless there were lifestyle changes many would perceive to be as restrictive as strong religion/government (or are linked with both) the demand for Middle Eastern oil would still be there…
I expect even the crusades ultimately started due to disagreements over equitable resource distribution between West and East.
i doubt hard times will be able to turn the tides of the information explosion.. we live in a very different world than we did a few decades ago. As science progresses the god of the gaps decreases, fundamentalism becomes harder to swallow, and logic becomes a greater basis for morals. This trend is very clear in mainstream christianity, high petrol/food prices is not going to start everyone wanting to burn the homosexuals etc.
There will always be believers, there will always be troubled people who need a crutch, but religious scriptures become a less relevant basis for moral values over time and nothing will change that.

That still wouldn’t preclude a shift to the hard right out of anger and despair. in my town gay men get killed not because of Christianity or Islam, but because individuals hate them and take matters into their own hands!
extreme fundamentalism religious fundamentalism might disappear, but so also can the amount of free speech and expression those of us who grew up in the 1980s take for granted. 1970s British media and society was much censored and controlled but very few would claim it was as bad as the Middle East even back then, and as I said previously Iran’s people used their power to bring in the fundamentalist government to protect their oil reserves.
Censorship and control can also be exerted via the free market and commercial pressures. This is far more effective in the West than violence and is in fact how most mainstream media is censored. Its obvious that commercial stations can be intimidated by product boycotts of prominent advertisers – and even public funded broadcasters can be swayed by people voting for free market friendly right wing politicians who slash their funding, also the independent production companies can be got at by targeting their projects for commercial stations.
All that said, I’m surprised that the Yanks caved in to the “Muslim” pressures of “violence” over South Park as they are supposed to have loads of cops and feds and armed citizens defending their “free speech” against foreign intruders – even European broadcasters have armed guards on some studios (I have worked in a place with these present). I suspect much more there is a wider issue here they aren’t letting on..
there is another aspect to this. Pakistan gets much of its internet connections from China via Hong Kong, there is a consensus across Asia irrespective of religion that a certain amount of censorship is accepted.
companies which can provide effectively censored, monitored and controlled network connections (for all manner of purposes) can make millions selling such solutions to these countries..
internet went wrong when the goverment invited themselves to the party…..its over-and-done-with open internet, we can only demand a buisness- and goverment free-net(here I suggest two sepparat nets!)….open it is not safe and that is the way it should be…bizz want safe payments; saty off internet, goverment want public service over the internet and serve all kind off deep personal data and to do important things like licensenes; stay off internet….its not safe and have never ment to be, it is an open world with no boundries with easy spread of information….and it should have stayed that way, instead we got all kind of bullshit rules….and not good for you as a person but good for control of your person….. its a war on words and we are in the middle of it….
